Summary

Autumn 1928. Three young women are on their way to India, each with a new life in mind. Rose, a beautiful but naive bride-to-be, is anxious about leaving her family and marrying a man she hardly knows. Victoria, her bridesmaid couldn't be happier to get away from her overbearing mother, and is determined to find herself a husband. And Viva, their inexperienced chaperone, is in search of the India of her childhood, ghosts from the past and freedom.

Each of them has their own reason for leaving their homeland but the hopes and secrets they carry can do little to prepare them for what lies ahead in India...

Wonderful book, beautifully read

Truly memorable, shedding a new light on India for me.. Sadly one can only write a book like this with real knowledge of the country and its people. Three young English women, very different, growing into adulthood. A lovely story, full of life. Easy to read or hear.

I loved the Characters

I loved the Characters- And Especially in the first half of the book when they were travelling on a ship and all together. It was also enthralling reading about their different lives when they arrived in Australia. Really enjoyed reading this and found it hard to put down.

Interesting times just before. partition

A long well narrated novel about India just before Partition. The story of the three girls keep you hooked until the conclusion. What happens to the three next we’ll never know, but it was a joy to share their lives thus far!

Fantastic book and narration

I loved this book, to think the author created this book in her head is astonishing to me. It is fantastic, I enjoyed it all the way through.
The narration was excellent as well, I didn't want the book to end. The best compliment ever.

A real to life experience of India long ago.

I loved this book very much. The story of three English girls and their journey of life was full of emotional highs and lows . You could never predict the ending. I would have liked to hear about the girls after their marriages.

Beautiful

A beautifully written story about another time and place. The characters developed and changed as they do over time and with experiences. Enriching phrases and poems were woven through the text

East of the sun

I loved this book, found it a varied listen, covering the subject of India from an empire point of view, would love to listen to similar titles. Wonderful story, love the connection to India under the Raj
