Summary
Set in and around the dark, misty canals of Lichfield, Stephen Booth's incredible new novel is awash with mystery.

Thank you Stephen for another great book.
I must admit to being a tad reluctant to read this one as I hadn't enjoyed your other stand alone one, I'm more of a Cooper and Fry fan. But as the next isnt yet out I took a deep breath and got this one. What a difference it was I could hardly put it down I just had to find out what happened next, in fact when I did I found myself still trying to guess the next chapter. So Thank you for the Brilliant read.

Not your usual Booth but good
This takes Booth away to the south from his usual Peak District to the industrial Midlands. The story spans a couple of centuries or so. It starts to get a bit confusing as to who is who as characters pop up and disappear for a while. You have to remember family trees, which I find difficult.

Long and Tedious
Only just got through this book. There are some dark secrets that the main character has to find out, despite the fact he does not want to (which takes a chapter to explain). There then follows a long and winding explanation of the family background and then we are drawn back to the second world war, and very unbelievable tale of two brothers, who I struggled to comprehend were anything to do with the story. Confused? So was I! Perhaps I missed the point of the book, but I think not. To me badly written and appallingly plotted. However, the reader was very good, its only saving grace.

Doesn’t seem to go anywhere
I listened to this for about 4 hours then gave up. Just seems to be a load of padding leading up to (presumably) some revelation, but not interesting enough to hold my attention or care about what the revelation might be. Returned.

Not an enjoyable read.
I have read all the previous books by Stephen Booth, but this particular book completely lost me.
It rambled on with too many characters to remember, so much so, I skipped some of it and just went to the last few chapters, something I don't do as I had paid for the pleasure of a good book!
It feels like an old book, published to meet requirements.
The saving grace was the narrator, I really like his accents and found the different characters believable.
