Summary

Michael Palin has kept a diary since being newly married in the late 1960s, when he was beginning to make a name for himself as a TV scriptwriter (for David Frost, the Two Ronnies, etc). Monty Python was just around the corner. In this first volume of his diaries, he tells for the first time how Python emerged and triumphed. Perceptive and funny, it chronicles not only his struggle to find a niche in the world of television comedy, but also the extraordinary goings on of the many powerful personalities who coalesced to form the Monty Python team.

An absolute joy

Fantastic work from my favourite Python. Michael has one of those voices you can listen to all day. Already got the next book ready to go. Brilliant, we’ll written and original idea that makes the hour’s while away. The Python’s can do no wrong for me.

takes yer back!

I have spent several enjoyable afternoons laying on the conservatory sofa listening to Michael Pailin's selected readings from his diary. Whilst I was never a big Monty Python fan, I nonetheless very much enjoyed listening to Palin's recollections, read in his relaxed manner, recalling a very memorable era for all of us aged around 60. Have just downloaded the next installment and hope it is as good.

Surprise

It isn’t what I expected at all! Come to think, I really don’t know what I expected. Michael Palin read his carefully noted diary in the way I have heard him talk on his films and travel progs. At first I didn’t think I would read it all, listen, too personal but I soon listened avidly of his life of many parties and drinking sessions with show biz folk. Of.course also his family featured, even the death of his Dad.
It was ok, more than I expected.

An Interesting read.

I bought this book as Python fan and I wasn't disappointed. It gives great insights into the feelings of the group at the height of their success and all from the viewpoint of the quiet python. The fact that Michael Palin narrates himself only adds to the enjoyment.

A must read for any Python fan. Not to be missed.

fascinating

I listened to halfway to hollywood first and immediately bought this as i wanted to know more about the early years of python. I'm old enough to have been around when Python was born although I can't recite the parrot sketch or any others. Palin is a great story telller it was fascinating to re live the 70's through his eyes knowing what we know now about his career and those of his fellow Python's

Great insight

Michael ..... sorry ..... Sir Michael gives an honest insight into how MPFS started grew into adulthood then matured into a bunch of guys who put the “alternative” into British Comedy.
Having grown up loving Monty Python and Ripping yarns it’s great to hear how it all came about.
Full of resolve to keep my own diary even if it’s only for one year.
