Den Leuten gefällt, was der Meister da an Abenteuerlichem hervorgezaubert hat, und das war schon vor mehr als 150 Jahren so. Es hat ihn selbst überrascht, wie begeistert das bewegte Leben des Grafen von Monte Christo von einem interessierten Publikum aufgenommen worden ist. Und das liegt nicht nur daran, dass die ergreifende Kost anfangs nur häppchenweise verabreicht worden ist, der Roman ist in fortgesetzten Erzählungen erschienen. Nun lässt es sich naturgemäß meist schneller lesen als schreiben, doch man hat ja auch anderes zu tun und war in jedem Falle sehr gespannt darauf, zu erfahren, wie die Geschichte weitergeht. Die Spannungsbögen sind nicht derart in sich geschlossen, dass man sich mit einer Episode zufriedengeben möchte. Ganz im Gegensatz dazu erstreckt sich manches Geheimnisvolle über einen längeren Zeitraum hinweg, um erst erheblich später aufgedeckt zu werden. Da rätselt man und spekuliert, kann es aber dennoch kaum erwarten, dass die tatsächliche, eben nicht anders gewollte Auflösung erfolgt.

Die revolutionären Jahre waren schon aufregend genug, doch erst nachdem Napoleon von dannen gezogen und auch die restaurative Phase überwunden war, wurde es in Frankreich richtig interessant durch die Wirren der bekannten Julirevolution. Man erinnert sich daran infolge der legendären Krönung Louis Philippes zum Bürgerkönig.

Very good narration, but lacks background info

The short (actually around 15 minutes in total and not 22 minutes as listed) audiobook in German language offers a very good and informative summary of the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo.
I'm amazed, that all the major facts and characters you need to know are mentioned, which makes this short book really helpful, if you just want to catch up or remind youself before writing a test etc.

Sadly, there isn't much background info about the story itself and how it came to be, something I had hoped for reading the synopsis.

The narrator does an excellent job, his pleasant voice makes for easy listening.
As he speaks quite fast and there are quite a few complicated words, I would recommend the Audiobook for advanced German speakers.
