"Deep Fakes and the Infocalypse is an urgent, thoughtful and thoroughly-researched book that raises uncomfortable questions about the way that information is being distorted by states and individuals... A must-read." - Greg Williams, Editor in Chief of WIRED UK

"Essential reading for any one interested about the shocking way information is and will be manipulated." - Lord Edward Vaizey

Deep Fakes are coming, and we are not ready.

Advanced AI technology is now able to create video of people doing things they never did, in places they have never been, saying things they never said.

In the hands of rogue states, terrorists, criminals or crazed individuals, they represent a disturbing new threat to democracy and personal liberty.

Deep Fakes can be misused to shift public opinion, swing Presidential elections, or blackmail, coerce, and silence individuals. And when combined with the destabilising overload of disinformation that has been dubbed 'the Infocalypse', we are potentially facing a danger of world-changing proportions.

Deep Fakes and the Infocalypse is International Political Technology Advisor Nina Schick's stark warning about a future we all need to understand before it's too late.

Deepfakes - the modern machine guns

A detailed account which provides many examples of the threats of political deepfakes being utilised by politicians such as Trump to disseminate mid/disinformation to manipulate the public and the impact of a pornographic nature predominately women.

The question posed by Nina is who should moderate the content and the problem of identifying that which is false. Nina does mention attempts at solving the issue such as by Kathryn Harrison’s Deepfakes and the Deep Trust Alliance advocating for collaboration policy tech and business amongst communities. The idea is correct however the implementation seems difficult for larger countries with more of a global influence or countries looking to compete such as China, India and Russia.

The rise of technofeudalism has made it easier for the eroding of democracy as a concept as a whole with countries looking to only further their personal interests and those which bring the leaders of these nations an opportunity to maintain power. The example of Estonia may be more difficult to implement due to the differing interests within larger and more globally influential countries and the solution is for all to contribute together as in Estonia, with the majority needing to be on the same page where deepfakes can fool some, (a small minority), but not all.

The interesting point to note is how deepfakes are the modern form of warfare, essentially cyberwarfare but the technique currently successfully used by Estonia goes back to the medieval times, joining the dots of the multiple layers, a Medieval fort with a moat, outer walls and inner walls to protect a country’s sovereignty.

The Best Way Of Confirming My Developed Opinion

A big thank you to the writer, narrator and publisher for a book that neatly allows me to feel justified with my opinions and ways to move forward with them.

Short and to the point

I really liked this book. Really interesting look into the information dystopia that is just around the corner thanks to digital disinformation. The book is a little broader than just video deep fakes but thats not a bad thing. There is also a chapter on Covid19 disinformation; it must have been added in just immediately before going to press and as I write this review in January 2021 I must say that chapter has proven somewhat prescient. Overall a really interesting book.

Competent but avoids the deeper issues

Whilst there is nothing wrong with the areas highlighted in the book, the absence of detailed look at how and why the ‘trusted’ news sources have lost the trust of the huge sections of the public is very noticeable. An interesting book however, if I had know it would skip these sorts of issues I wouldn’t have started it.
