Summary
They're stranded. They're scared. But they're not alone. Something is waiting for them...in the darkness of the ship.
In the distant future, a team of diplomats embark on a mission to make contact with an authoritarian ship that has gone radio silent. It's supposed to be a simple job, a look-see operation to make sure something terrible hasn't happened. The leader is prone to fits of violence, and there are rumors of previous human rights abuses.
Only, when they arrive, the ship is...empty. The question is - where did everybody go?
Armed only with riot gear, they explore the ship, intent on discovering the truth about what's happened on The Ark. What they find will be more nightmarish than anything they've seen before.
Indeed, it's worse than anything they could imagine.
Dead Shock is a creepy atmospheric novel from the author of The Playroom and Party Snatchers.
Fans of H.P. Lovecraft and Jeff Vandermeer’s Annihilation will love this claustrophobic, terrifying book. It's equal parts horror and soft science fiction. Think Alien meets Dawn of the Dead.
A mix of body horror, action, and sci-fi, Dead Shock is the first in the Shock series of novels. It's the kind of dystopian sci-fi or dystopian horror you'd come to expect from Wallace Henry. So, grab a space suit, grab a force gun, and hold your breath, because nobody can breathe in space.

Shockingly abrupt ending and just a bit lazy..
Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
A rather disappointing experience here as the story started really promising with the 'rescue ships' arrival but quickly feel to tropes and lazy writing, with a literal exposition character who magically enters conversations to explain things, leaving you wondering how she got there and where she hides between!
Aside from this though, there is a good amount of gore, some imaginative body-horror but the sudden 'To Be Continued' came as a shock as normally a first part would have a closure and end of the narrative with threads left for part 2, but this has none of that which is a shame.
In all, a good, messy scifi horror, well narrated, but lacking in closure or proper storytelling.

interesting concept
I can see similarities between what the author was trying to go for and deadspace but it never quite reaches that level of depth and atmosphere of the games but isnt awful either.
Despite this, im sure anyone after a short scifi horror with techno religious vibes will like this.

More shocked I made it to the end...
I completed this in one afternoon (which could be the amount of time Henry took to write it). Frankly, it has a generic made for TV feel about it that's alright as a bit of brain candy but ultimately isn't very fulfilling. It borrows heavily from the likes of the Dead Space franchise and lacks originality. The characters are generic along with their back stories and the dialogue is pretty hackneyed at best.
The audio clarity of Tom Sleeker's narration is fine, which means you can enjoy some very questionable accents in crystal quality.
Personally I cannot recommend this book to anyone looking for a decent sci-fi horror novel.
