Summary

Tried, convicted, executed...and innocent?

One of the reasons Mark Banning had become a private detective was to help those with seemingly "lost cause" cases no one else would take. The case Diedre Hammond begged him to take seemed hopeless - DNA evidence proved her brother had raped and killed a six-year-old.

Months had passed since Diedre's brother, Sam, had been executed, protesting his innocence up to the moment of execution. But all the evidence had pointed to him unerringly. It was too late to save her brother but not too late to clear her brother's name and see that justice was served to the real criminal, whomever that might be.

So she brought her case to Mark Banning and pleaded for his help. When he heard the case against her brother, Banning thought it was a lost cause, and he hated to take her money. But she was insistent, and lost causes were his specialty, so he accepted the assignment reluctantly.

The deeper Banning dug, the more dead ends he found. Had it been a case of mistaken identity? No, even the DNA evidence had led exclusively to Sam. Then maybe the lab had botched it?

Diedre's family had cut all ties with them long ago, at about the time of Sam's arrest. The reasons for it were vague and mysterious. Was there some long-buried secret regarding Diedre and Sam, unknown perhaps even to all, or nearly all, of the family as well?

Just when Banning was about to give up, he must have gotten a little closer to an answer than he realized because someone struck him down and left him to die....

The real killer had made a mistake. He had proved Diedre was right, and he had made it personal. Banning would stop at nothing now to catch him.

disturbing subject, but great listen

Great story on a disturbing subject. Narration was excellent, and the subject dealt with care, would recommend 5 stars

Relax and enjoy

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. I wanted to listen to this story because the blurb made me feel it was a relax and enjoy story. It is. It really made me stop and think just how far will people go and let an innocent person be judged. The characters in this story felt so real. The story flow is consistent. There was little to discover about who did it but how they would be brought to justice was the issue and why no one had turned him in. I really enjoyed the way the author resolves everything. I will read/listen to more from this author.

Interesting listen good story great narration

To be honest I am not a fan of the cover, but that is an irrelevance. The story was interesting and the narration really suited the story. It has intrigued me so much I am going to listen to the next one in the series as the detective appealed to me as well as the story and writing style.

I was given a free copy but the review is entirely my own.

PI Mystery

I would not have picked this audio book based on the cover because I love cozy mysteries and dislike detective books.
If it wasn’t for the fact that I wanted to listen to a mystery I wouldn’t have read the blurb. And it had me intrigued (one of the best descriptions I have read that enticed me to pick up the book).
Yet I did not have any expectation. Just because the cover or blurb is good does not mean the story would be too. But the author really surprised me. I was hooked from the beginning and I wanted to know more.
I must warn you that the topic in this mystery is not for everyone. I will also have to admit that if I knew it was about a paedophile, I would not have picked it up, no matter how good the blurb was.
There were parts that I found hard to listen to, especially the part where we are told what happened to the girl or when we are in the criminal’s mind. This gave the book a more realistic feel to it. However, the book is not full of such scenes and it’s not graphic (behind closed doors).
This is the first detective book that I liked to listen/read. The PI is not stupid, he uses his brains with the help of his assistant. He is on friendly terms with the police unlike other books where the police for some reason hate the detectives. And it happens over a long period of time not a week.
This is a multi POV, with some violence and no profanity. There is no sexual content but we are told the victim is abused and a little detail is given. The actual abuse of the victim happens behind closed doors. As I mentioned before this is not for everyone. But if you can get past this then it is a good listen/read.
The narrator suited this book and he voiced all the characters (there were quite a lot of them).

Guilty or Innocent?

A really enjoyable story starting off with the execution of Sam Hammond a convicted rapist and murderer of a little girl. Enter Mark Danning, a PI specialising in lost causes. Sams sister believes her brother innocent and asks Mark to investigate The case. The more he digs the more it appears that Sam was guilty... until someone threatens Mark and he realises there is more to this than meets the eye. The story is well paced and is well narrated by Tim Lundeen who helps bring the characters to life. I thought the ending a little predictable, let's say I predicted the outcome fairly early in the book but I still enjoyed listening to the very last few minutes. Highly recommended listen. *****
I was kindly given a copy of this book by the publisher and leave this honest and voluntary review.

Innocent

Tim Lundeen narration did an excellent job covering all the characters

What a twisted dark path of deceit this story uncovered.
A wonderful mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It kept me intrigued and wondering, who was innocent and who was guilty.
