DAUGHTERS-IN-LAW : THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER

When you've dedicated your life to your children, what happens when they grow up?

Rachel loves being at the centre of her large family. She has devoted herself fiercely to bringing up her three sons, but at their childhood home on the wide, bird-haunted coast of Suffolk, Rachel finds that her control begins to slip away. Other women - her daughters-in-law - are usurping her position. They have become more important to her boys than she is.

A crisis brings these subtle rifts to the surface.

Can there be a way forward, if they are to survive as a family?

Enjoyable

I enjoy Joanna Trollope's books and this was no exception but I find the narrator overacts. I have heard her reading other books and I always have the same reaction which is a pity as I usually enjoy the books she reads!

Gently enjoyable. Makes you reflect on family roles especially those of mothers/ mothers-in- law to daughters/ daughters-in- law.

Trollope at her best !

Where does Daughters-in-Law rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

For anyone who is a daughter , daughter in law or mother in law this book is a must. She deconstructs these complex relationships in a way which is sensitive and respectful. Through the different characters she presents the reality of life which shifts and changes despite our wish at times for it to remain static.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I hated Charlotte but perhaps her characterisation was a little too close for comfort. I also hated Rachel for the same reason.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I read this some years ago and it was the catalyst for me to evaluate some of my own behaviours as a daughter in law and consider how they may have impacted on all those around me. I listened to this narration captivated. Thanks Joanna from the bottom of my heart.

Any additional comments?

I didn't want it to end !!

A gentle, well narrated book

This book, set over the course of a summer, follows four marriages. That of Mum and Dad and the marriages of their three sons and of course, daughters-in-law. At first I was waiting for something to happen but it's not that kind of story. Instead this is a very intelligently written account of the relationships between husbands and wives, between brothers and between a mother and her sons.

The characters are very complex and likable in themselves, but the excellent narrator brings a dreamy, innocent naivete to Petra that I wouldn't have noticed had I read the book myself.

I found myself thinking of these people long after I had finished the book. A must if you are a daughter-in-law or if you have a daugher-in-law but an enjoyable listen for anyone.

Can taste the sea

I enjoyed this. A middle class gentle novel which is unkind to mothers.
Well narrated.

Good book but a very annoying narrator

The storyline was good but the narrator was extremely annoying with her terrible attempt at Scandinavian accent, and slipping into other unrecognisable accents for no apparent reason. Other than that, an enjoyable listen.

Enjoyable story

The story was good once i got into it. I almost gave up as the narrator is a bit shrill at times. Joanna Trollope remains one of my favourite authors but I shall look out for other narrators on my next choice.

For all Mother in Laws

Quite a good holiday read - no surprises - just a family at wits with the interfering Mother.
