Good story

This book was spoilt a little for me because of the wild fluctuations in volume, I don't know if it was the reader or the mechanics but despite that an enjoyable book with a decent story line. Nice easy listening.

Dreadful narration

I started series after listening to Calladine and Baylis by the same author. I loved that series and the narration by Jonathan Keeble was first class. He was always going to be a hard act to follow. As others have said the narration on this series is seriously bad. I have listened to a lot of books and never found any books that I was going to send back because of the narration but this came very very close. It was just so hard to listen to. The voices were bad but the worse thing was the emphasis was put in all the wrong places it was just how you read to young children. I’m glad I persevered as the storyline was good and it’s good to find the story of Greco prior to the Calladine series. The narration is just about bearable now so on to the next book.

Brilliant 5 star audio book

I have read some of Helen's books and loved them so thought I had better start at the beginning of this series.

The book is a very well written story which kept me hooked all the way through, even though I did guess who the murderer was about half way through, I just didn't know who else would die and whether they would get away with it or not.

The narration was also very good and it was easy to distinguish between characters as well as their voices being consistent all the way through

Boarding

I love a good crime book but this didn't grip me at all. Not memorable and not worth investigating in the series

Very poor sound quality!

Very poor sound quality, partly due to narrators voice! It's so low at times it can't be heard!! Story ok but the poor sound spoilt it for me!!!

Intricate

I found it difficult to get the characters sorted out in my mind initially, however once there the intrigue took off. enjoyed the story very much.
I did find the narrator spoke very quietly on times and i had to rerun the section.

Struggled to understand

I didn't take get into the book because it was so difficult to listen to. Mumbled whispers, then very loud. I like to listen when I go to bed, but this was impossible because of the variation in sound levels. I must have restated half a dozen times because there were parts where I just couldn't make out the narrative.

Curiosity was raised

Through the other series and it didn’t not disappoint. DI Greco is not your typical book detective. Not superman or hero not car crash either as many book detectives are struggling with job and life. He has some traits which can help him with his jobs but not with his teams and he need to learn to use his personality for his advantage. Good story and interesting twists and turns but a narrator who is making it difficult to get into the story and the characters for quite a while. Gets easier after getting used to his style and voice but it is difficult to identify the different characters at times as the voice changes nuances and volume but stays very similar most times. I’m sure that will improve as it takes away from the story. There are also quite some graphic scenes luckily not very long and less frequent when the story progresses but with a vivid imagination can distract from the story itself too much. Still it is a valuable addition to the DI Calladine series as it brings some characters and some storylines together without just copying the characters into another environment. Lots of potential.
