About this listen

Deadpool meets Game of Thrones in this thrilling tale of demons, dragons and treachery.

After Breed, a thief-assassin of small renown, is chased by a dragon, tricked by a demon, almost killed by a psychopathic gang boss and hunted by a ferocious spider, life really takes a turn for the worse. Sentenced to five years bonded servitude to a one-handed priest magician, Breed must find the hammer of the ancient hero known only as The Hammer of the North within a year and a day...or else. So, with only a drug-addicted vagrant, a rat-faced child and a timid priest for backup, Breed sets out for the mighty city of Valen and the tomb of the Hammer. What could possibly go wrong?

Grim, dark and funny, Dangerous to Know is the first audiobook in the epic sword and sorcery trilogy The Chronicles of Breed.

When it was first published in 2014, this story was short-listed for the Robert Holdstock, British Fantasy Society, Best Novel Award.

It's a grower

The first time I listened to this series it took me a small while to get used to the narrator. I came to enjoy it thoroughly however, and it gets better as the series progresses. On the second listening some years later it is one of the best narrations I have heard. The story is fast paced and the author has a very pleasing style. This is not hard, gritty, political, world building fantasy, and it doesn't have any pretentions to be. It is easier reading than that. You simply follow the adventures of Breed, a very well written anti hero. The universe Breed inhabits is very well developed, but you do not get the impression that that is the point of the story, and these days I find that refreshing. The books are short enough that they are not left wanting for something more expansive, but long enough to be satisfying.

Fast paced, fantasy novel.

This was not my normal genre but having enjoyed books by this narrator before I thought I would give it a try and was not disappointed. The narrator brought the characters to life with his different voices. The main character, Breed, is a witty character, with a slightly weird, cruel sense of humour. It was fast paced and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels.

Excellent, a funny fantasy novel

The style of reading has a unique tempo that takes some getting used to but becomes integral to the feel of the characters. Accents add to well rounded and sometimes very funny character creation and story.

Fantastic swearing

Narrator was a little high pitched, but I have just come from listening to Steven fry who is fantastic so it's a high bar to clear. The story was great, fantasy adventure with great world building. Its almost just listening to this for the creative swear words and phrases. Some of which are now in my more frequented vocabulary store.

Good story with potential

I really enjoyed this, it was easy listening. The main character development was good, I wish there had been more of that for some of the other characters. As fantasy novels go, the plot was simple, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. it took me a while to get used to the narrator but a couple of chapters in I really started to enjoy it thoroughly.

Overall Good, bad editing.

Great sorry, audiobook has sloppy editing with large quiet gaps in conversations. It leaves you wondering if the audiobook has stopped playing or not, and often kills the flow in the excellently written witty back and forths.
