Summary

Desperate tyrants often resort to desperate tactics...regardless of their species.

After suffering a near-catastrophic defeat by Terran Fleet Command, the Pelaran AI strain gambles on a bold, “hands-on” approach to controlling the destiny of a human world. On the pre-industrial world of Didara 4, Dryden Beck awakens alone in the depths of the Scarsdow Forest, knowing that he has murdered thousands of his own people, but with no memory of how or why.

He soon discovers that he has been forever changed; modified against his will to serve as the most powerful weapon in the arsenal of a ruthless puppet master bent on total domination. Stripped of powers he never wanted but now desperately needs, Dryden finds himself caught in the middle of a war in which both sides - those he once sought to destroy as well as his former master who forced him to do so - see him as their most dangerous and hated adversary.

To prove his allegiance, Dryden’s only choice is to flee. It is a journey that will take him across a region where opposing sides seek to destroy one another, and wielding technologies are introduced centuries before their time, supplied by a mysterious benefactor whose motivations remain unknown.

With the help of a pair of enigmatic Grey aliens, can this lone human regain control of the same deadly weapons he once used to slaughter his own people in time to save them?

Flamecaller hits the mark…

Great story, looking forward to the next book in the TFS saga. Would definitely recommend.

Not what I expected

Unfortunately I can’t say I enjoyed this book as much as the first 5. It’s so far removed from the story that it’s more of spin off series than a sequel. The story itself is okay, not a massive fan of the narration, a lot of the characters sounded the same. Overall I’d say don’t get this if you want an actual book 6 of the TFC series but if you want more lore from that universe then sure, give it a go!

Reminiscent of cowboys and aliens

I thought the story was great but it just ends. it seems to me it was written to tweak your interests in the TFS books which are very good however, I have already read them and this book Ethereal , short as it is, to me seems to be the authors way of boosting TFS sales. if you haven't read the TFS series this book would make little sense to you, thus tweaking your interest to go for the first two free books and purchasing the rest of the series, a bit of clever merchandising.
I don't mean to be negative about this series I thoroughly enjoyed it, really good adult science fiction , well worth the read

Tori, please continue

So the story is good but feels unfinished. The TFC series is one of my favourite sci fi series, but this book doesn’t really add much to the overall world building and is a bit out of place. Tori, you are an excellent author, just keep going. Looking forward to the next book if you have it in you, but back to TFC actual would be good. Perhaps the grays discover some weird artefact and need the TFC’s help to investigate, could be ALAI related? Lots of potential to move this series forward.

Excellent finish to the saga

Loved the first 5 books and this was a really good follow on. The change in style worked really well. I really hope there are further books in the pipeline!

Annoyed there’s not more. Frustratingly good story.

I left it one year between listening to the first five books and then listening to this one. It is a good story and I blinking love the sci-fi technology and international politics et cetera I’m just really flipping annoyed now that that’s it. There’s no more. It feels like this should be the first book out of another five and it just kind of ends. the first five books was so bleeding amazing that I cannot leave a bad or negative review for you however, I would just really really love it if there was more to the story. Left edging hard. 🫤

An unfinished disapointment

It doesn't bode well when a book starts with the auther needing to justifying (or apoligies) for its exsistance and place in a saga.
The story itself had promise, to add to a interesting universe. Sadly though this is a non sensicle, short lived, poorly thought out piece of writing, The disipointment is, after reading the rest of this well writen series, it leaves me only to believe the auther got bored and this is an atempt on making sure the publishers didnt ask for another one. Couldn't even be bothered to actually complete the book.
