About this listen

King. Politician. Warrior. Conqueror.

1189. Richard the Lionheart's long-awaited goal comes true as he is crowned King of England. Setting his own kingdom in order, he prepares to embark on a gruelling crusade to reclaim Jerusalem.

With him on every step of the journey is Ferdia, his loyal Irish follower. Together they travel from southern France to Italy, to the kingdom of Sicily and beyond.

Finally poised to sail to the Holy Land, Richard finds a bitter two-year-long siege awaiting him. And with it, the iconic Saracen leader responsible for the loss of Jerusalem, Saladin.

No one can agree who should fill the empty throne of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and Saladin's huge army shadows Richard's every move. Conditions are brutal, the temperatures boiling, and on the dusty field of Arsuf, the Lionheart and his soldiers face their ultimate test...

Enjoyable and informative

I had always heard of Richard the lion heart and sort of knew what he was about but not in any detail. Whilst I know this a book of fiction, I also know that it was largely based on real events and historical fact. I like that both as a lover of history and of adventure stories of the both the modern, future and olden days.

Truly epic

This is honestly one of Ben best books ever and I read them all. The story is so well written it’s great at every stage and the characters and also feel so real that you can’t put it down. I honestly think this is his best book and I highly recommend you read this.

Wonderful Sequel

I really enjoyed this book, not quite as much as the first however, I feel that the plot of this book was bordering on overstaying it’s welcome towards the end but it come to a satisfying end which didn’t by any means overstay it’s welcome. I’m more enthused than ever to follow this through to the third book and can’t wait to have a listen to it.

Ben does a wonderful job of developing the characters in a believable way and captures the sporadic nature of the period as well. I enjoy most, not quite knowing where the story will go next.

Philip as the narrator is perfect and I can’t complain whatsoever about his performance. He sounds very comfortable with the book and brings life into every scene.

I can’t wait for the next instalment!

Great historical novel.

This was an excellent story, well told and well narrated. The fact and fiction were woven together seamlessly.

Gooooood!

I read the first one and I think I would've enjoyed it more if I read this one too.
More than the first, this one seemed to repeat itself and it dragged on too.
I still enjoyed it but it did take forever to get through even with it on 1.6x

It is written beautifully, the way the characters are written about and the plot line. Definitely one to recommend to someone who enjoys war historical fictions.
