Superb
Excellently written and narrated. Provides an engrossing account of the story behind some of the key Ashes tests over the last 100 or more years. Some great insight and stories across all chapters, and an excellent PDF addition to the audible version.

Good listen, maybe not what I was looking for !
very good listen! however, I personally enjoy hearing about the tales, grudges and quirky stories from around the game ... this book heavily focuses on the actual cricket which took place ... probably more geared towards a cricket purist

Great Reference for Historical Matches.
I'm a chap who likes to relive old Ashes matches and having this as a handy resource has been invaluable. Helps gives some dimension and history to some of the greatest test matches in history. It's a great introduction to the bodyline series and a nostalgic outlook on the 2005 ashes. It's not a book i usually read start to finish, but skip the specific matches i want to relive. Simon Hughes also does a fantastic job of the read too!

Listened to this history of the Ashes just as the 2019 series started. Funny, informative and well worth a listen.

Great stories
Really enjoyed hearing about all the legends of the game that I knew so little about. I like Simon Hughes, and listen to his podcast / read The Cricketer, but I slightly struggled with the writing style - there were numerous clichés and the occasional cringe-worthy reference (strokeplay / foreplay being the worst!). I would also personally reduce the focus on the recent series - I can see why he did it, but perhaps the addition of a Smith vs Stokes 2019 concluding chapter can be used to streamline and frame the part post-Warne, bringing it all together as a narrative effectively and rounding off the new Bradman / redemption stories, while cutting back some of the post-2006 detail. Still really interesting though.

Dodgy accents and similes
I liked the idea and format of this - but the audio version doesn’t quite work. Simon Hughes’ imitated accents are poor parodies and really distract from the text. The similies are similarly and summarily woeful: the sort of writing that could be found in a poor GCSE paper. Just write the facts. He also skips through almost the entirety of the 1980s and 1990s, which feels like an odd choice given the pre-war series he does pick.
It’s OK but could have been a lot better with a stronger editor.
