Summary

Accepting my career in the Army is over after losing my leg is hard. But the obnoxious, good looking, glass-half-full surfer in my physical therapy sessions is worse.

And god help him if he doesn’t stop trying to give me advice.

Living in a home with three of my closest veteran buddies is a challenge as we all have our crosses to bear and wounds to heal from, but mine only seem to be getting deeper with every step forward I take. I already have to adjust to a new life as a civilian. I don’t need a sexuality crisis to go with it.

But Heath is making me question everything I thought I knew about myself. And while that should terrify me, somehow, he’s helping me feel braver than I ever have before.

Creek is the first book of the Honorably Discharged series, featuring a grumpy veteran with a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas, a sunshine surfer who can bring out the best in almost everyone, a bisexual awakening, found family, hurt/comfort, and a steamy happily ever after.

One of my favorite books of the year!

"Creek" is the first book in the honorably discharged series by E.M. Lindsey and Nora Phoenix. It's an emotional contemporary romance. We follow Creek and Heath, who meet during PT. The two men have both lost part of their leg and are at different stages in their recovery. Creek is a stern and serious military man and Heath is a sunshine and optimistic surfer. At the beginning of the book the two of them are antagonistic and have an enemies to lovers vibe.
I adored this story with all my heart. It had everything I love. Deep and complex characters who grow and learn, beautiful writing, great pacing and a fantastic cast of well developed and interesting side characters.
I cared for both Creek and Heath. I wanted them to heal emotionally and find their happily ever after. I was really rooting for them. When they finally got together their chemistry was fantastic. Their journey wasn't an easy one but it was beautiful.
I adored how the narrator voiced Creek and Heath. I love these characters and he really brought them to life. Fantastic audiobook, great quality. I highly recommend it!

enemies to lovers, grumpy-sunshine, characters with disabilities, new series

I really enjoyed this collaboration. Creek and Heath's journey, individually and together, was well paced and heartfelt. Great set of side characters for the remaining series.

Excellent performance by John Solo.

Fab

A great listen loved the characters and how they dealt with their loss of limbs it was sad how some people felt uneasy with Creek and Heath when they mentioned it like they were making it about themselves 🙁

MM - Moving an gripping story

Where to start? This book has everything, from a recently wounded and disabled veteran who has lost his leg to his career and his adjustment to life.

At the rehab centre, there is this infuriating man who keeps getting in Creek's face. He is full of sunshine and so annoying. He doesn't seem to care that Creek wants to wallow in self-pity.

This is a well-written story about two guys with similar injuries but completely different outlooks. It's a deep dive into their lives, including their mental health. I was captivated from the start by this story and fell in love with both Creek and Heath.

John Solo did a great job narrating this book. The characters were brought to life, giving the story an immersive feel. I highly recommend this audio.

Great Story & Narration🎧Gripping & Heartfelt!

This is a great start to an amazing new series written by the wonderfully talented Nora Phoenix and E.M Lindsey. The story not only captivated my attention the entire time, but tugged at my heartstrings too. Creek a sergeant in the Army, lost his leg in an explosion, and he is struggling with the loss and his life without his leg. He is in psychical therapy to learn to walk again with a prosthetics and he clashes with one of the other patients who also lost his leg, Heath. Heath started physical therapy three weeks before Creek, who he named Sergeant Grumpy because of his demeanor. He lost his leg in a motorcycle accident and is coping with his loss way better than Creek, because he keeps a positive outlook and has set goals, two being to ride again and to surf and catch a wave. The two are opposites in many ways, not just their grumpy/sunshine demeanor, but Creek is straight and Heath is gay. Despite their differences, the chemistry between them is undeniable, and they are drawn to each other like a moth to a flame. It was great to watch these two bicker and then get to know each other, and it was also great to learn more about them individually, too. I loved all the layers to the story and how it all played out, with a perfect balance of drama, angst, heartfelt emotions and a slow burn, but worth the wait romance. The writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. My heart went out to Creek, who was career Army, and with a career-ending injury and must rethink his life plans. He has a great support system, a found family, the guys he lives with and I am looking forward to their stories and learning more about them too. Nora Phoenix and E.M. Lindsey, thank you for this wonderful story and emotional roller coaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 With John Solo at the mic you know you are in for a treat of a listen, he is a versatile voice artist, humanizing his characters, giving each a voice that is fitting and is believable in every role. His portrayal of Creek was perfection, showcasing his personality and grumpy demeanor, as well as his angst and inner turmoil and he was just as amazing as Heath, grasping all aspects of his personality from his determination to his vulnerable moments. And he was fabulous at performing the roles of all the secondary characters, too. He sets the perfect tone for the story, captures all the characters’ emotions and has you feeling every single one. John Solo is an entertaining storyteller and his performance elevates this already amazing story to another level. Thank you for another exceptional listen.

Brill

This is a brilliant start to this series with its world building and I loved how both Heath and Creek meet at PT. I also loved how Heath get through to Creek without meaning to. I can’t wait for Bean’s book and seeing everything evolve.

Could have been amazing but didn't hit the mark

This had so much potential to be a great book, with interesting characters, great challenges and good setting and supporting characters, but somehow the execution fell flat for me. I'm so sick of the trope of a baby bi guy 'discovering' how good sex can really be, getting stressed out because he doesn't know how to treat male dates versus female dates, and so many other details that just have a sexist, toxic masc vibe. It felt like a lazy writing choice that I don't associate with N.Phoenix books, and kept pulling me out of the story.
This is a completely average book on the relationship front, and manages to redeem itself a lot on the exploration of traumatic injury and recovery, though a couple of the therapists are not great examples of professionals, which again just felt lazy and under-researched.
Amazing narration as always from John Solo 🙂
