Summary
A girls' night out means three things to me: drinking whiskey with my best friend, trying not to kill anyone, and keeping my magic hidden. A fae gladiator like me isn’t supposed to exist anymore.
But my Friday night takes a bad turn when a lethally gorgeous fae - Ruadan - tries to assassinate me. He's known as the Wraith, and he's taken a vow of silence until he’s slaughtered the outlaws on his kill list. Outlaws like me.
Ruadan lets me live on one condition: I have to earn my place at the Institute of the Shadow Fae. As a powerful fighter, I can take the competition.
But things fall apart when I’m given an impossible choice: Betray my mentor Ruadan or my best friend dies. Now, I face a quandary my gladiatorial past did not prepare me for.
This book is from the Demons of Fire and Night world.

I got into the book more as it went on
I much prefer the Dark Fae FBI series by the same author to this one, but this book was decent. I was unsure about it for a while and it teetered on being 3 stars, but it improved as it went on and I found the world building interesting. I look forward to getting the next book in the series.
I think the narrator is why I struggled to get into it at first. Being British myself I found the accent distracting as it was obvious the narrator was putting the accent on. Most of the time she was spot on, but then would say some words very strangely, like “glatiator” instead of “gladiator”. She was mostly good though.

Excellent
Arianna is enjoying her night until Ruadan a Fae assassin tries to kill her then her life is changed forever .
Excellent start to the series only let down by the narrator not being able to pronounce certain words the way they should have been said with the British accent.

Emotions and suspense
I have read some of C.N. Crawford books and enjoyed how easily she could surprise me. She knows how to build a cruel world and unique characters. The blurb of this book chough my interest immediately.
When Arianna is forced to earn her place at the court of the shadow fae she is torn between loyalty, survival instincts, her wish to protect and much more.
The heroine is a special character. Years of slavery formed her and she is focused on the rules she had to learn. While it was not easy to identify with her, I appreciate the well written character. She is strong and she got some weak spots. I am looking forward to see how she fights her conditioning in the following books.
When Ruadan becomes her mentor the tension between them builds up fast. But her emotions are poisoned with her past. The author serves a bitter sweet cocktail of feelings.
Not only the emotions roped me into the book, the suspense and action did it as well.
The audio book is narrated by Amanda Dolan. I loved her interpretation of the different characters.
Fortunately the whole series is already available and also published as audio book. The next book "court of darkness" is on top of my wish list.
Note: I won a free copy of the audiobook, with no conditions. I wrote my honest review voluntarily.

Overall a good story but shame about the narration
The story was good which was the only thing that stopped me abandoning listening this book. The narrator is an American voice actress who jumps between proper English, an awful Cockney accent then on top of that some words have Irish and Scottish lilts. It is so distracting. To be honest even her southern American accent for the main characters friend is also terrible! I'd avoid listening to anything she has narrated in the future.
