About this listen
This big-canvas international spy thriller marks the beginning of a brilliant new direction for Rory Clements.
1936. Europe is in turmoil. The Nazis have marched into the Rhineland. In Russia, Stalin has unleashed his Great Terror. Spain has erupted in civil war. In Berlin, a young Englishwoman evades the Gestapo to deliver vital papers to a Jewish scientist. Within weeks she is found dead, a silver syringe clutched in her fingers.
In an exclusive London club, a conspiracy is launched that threatens the very heart of government. When a renowned society couple with fascist leanings are found brutally murdered, a maverick Cambridge professor is drawn into a world of espionage he knows only from history books. The deeper Thomas Wilde delves, the more he finds to link the murders with the girl with the silver syringe - and, even more worryingly, to the scandal surrounding the Abdication....

An excellent spy thriller
A spy story, with intrigue, based on a factual foundation, which gives it depth and realism. Coupled with great narration, it is a hard to put down. A very enjoyable audiobook.

plot
automatic rifles would not have been available to german sponsored troops in 1936. Several other technical details are inaccurate.

Excellent
The characters were well defined. The exciting plot was intricate but not difficult to follow. It’s interesting to speculate on how much was fact and how much fiction.
Adam Sims was an excellent reader. His speech was clear, well paced and expressive. He added to the characterisation by his effective use of accents.

A dissapointing start
I have a couple of Rory Clements' books purchased via the Deal of the Day, so I thought I would start at the beginning and get this to listen to first. I enjoy novels that have a 'hidden history' aspect to them, so I was disappointed with this one not to get author's notes at the end describing the real events that inspired the plot. The abdication is a well-known story, but the plot to stop it and change history described in this novel appears to have no basis in reality (perhaps it was planned, but it would be nice to know). The writing is OK but a little wooden. Some of the descriptions of real-life characters read as if they are taken from a history book. The leading characters are engaging but lack depth. The narration is good, but the lack of pauses between scenes (and the scenes switch frequently) are a bit confusing. One minute Tom Wilde is speaking, the next minute Stanley Baldwin is!
I have brought the second novel from Oxfam and am founding the print version easier to follow and more interesting. Perhaps this series isn't for me on Audible!

Fantastic start to the Thomas Wilde spy series
An intelligent multilayered story intertwining different elements from the history of 1936, I read this after 3 other Thomas Wilde novels and it stands alone on its own, while setting up the character and future relationships. Not a lot is said about this period anymore but the degree to which the nazis had support in the UK is startling. Although this is a work of fiction, It's all too believable.
