Summary
Nevada; the near future; a family about to implode.
In a world run by computers, hackers have power - and awkward, home-schooled Colt is among the best. But when Colt secretly submits his mother Naomi's breakthrough research to a biotech conference and it is immediately shut down, mother and son are forced to go on the run. Now Colt is coding for his life.
As the military and Colt's father hunt them through a Las Vegas of self-driving cars and surveillance drones, Naomi has to decide how far she will go to protect her child. Can she kill a man? Can she destroy the world?
And Colt is finally forced to leave the comfort of virtual reality and face his greatest terror: love.
The world is evolving; humans need to evolve, too....
For fans of William Gibson, Ready Player One and Naomi Alderman's The Power, Connect thrillingly explores what connection - both human and otherwise - might be in a digital age.
Critic reviews
"In this imagining of a digital future with fully immersive virtual reality, narrator Robertson Dean depicts scientist and single mother Naomi and her socially awkward son, Colt. Naomi's latest discovery will change the world, and when Colt releases her report early, Dean must match the pace and tension of this techno-thriller with a family drama. The pressure amps up when Colt's father, an agent with a secret government agency, enters the picture. Dean ably juggles the confrontation between Colt's parents and the tenderness of the boy. The audiobook describes a frightening future in which Naomi fights against the soul-stealing potential of scientific discovery, and Dean uses his expressive voice to rise to the challenge." Really liked the concepts outlined. Excellent points on the changing interface between humans and technogly. My first Julian Gough read looking forward to checking out his other books.

Could've been a lot shorter!
Definitely not the best book I've listened to. Last 2 hours added nothing to the story and several chapters didn't seem like they were needed. Such a shame because the concept was very clever and without all the waffley chapters would've held my attention much better and streamlined the story.
