Summary

**THE GROUNDBREAKING BESTSELLER AND CLASSIC**

'Excellent . . . amazing how much still comes as a surprise' New York Times Book Review

'Like Capote's In Cold Blood, this tour de force gets below the who and the what of a horrifying incident to lay bare the devastating why' People

'A staggering work of journalism' Washington Post

'The tragedies keep coming. As we reel from the latest horror...' So begins the epilogue, illustrating how Columbine has become the template for nearly two decades of "spectacle murders." It makes the imperative to understand the crime that sparked this flame more urgent than ever.

What really happened on April 20th, 1999? The horror left an indelible stamp on the American psyche, but most of what we thought we knew was wrong. It wasn't about jocks, Goths or the Trench Coast Mafia. Dave Cullen was one of the first reporters on the scene, and he spent ten years on this book, the definitive account. With a keen investigative eye and psychological acumen, he draws on mountains of evidence, insight from the world's leading forensic psychologists , and the killers' own words and drawings. Cullen paints raw portraits of two polar opposite killers. They contrast starkly with the flashes of resilience and redemption among the survivors.

Heartbreaking, insightful, sometimes infuriating

We are all familiar with what happened at Columbine, like most people I have seen Bowling for Columbine several times too. This book gives a totally different level of insight. This book was suggested to me by a friend and the one thing she said to me was... The amount of red flags from those boys will shock you... It really is staggering.

Thorough account

Excellent summary and recount of all the events that took place during, before and after Columbine. The entire thing is thoroughly researched and evidenced with professional witnesses like criminal psychologists and PTSD experts, but also full of eyewitness accounts from the day itself. Well written, highly recommend.

Calm, clear and objective

A non-sensational, calm and and clear review of the events of the Columbine High school shooting. This is not a tabloid style thrill-seeking account, but a considered approach to what happened at Columbine, and how it affected the lives of survivors.

Just excellent

What a great true crime read. Objective and compassionate, Dave Cullen gets a perfect balance between honouring the victims and survivors and opening up the minds of the killers for us. It is written with great detail but not gratuitously violent or gory.
I understand that not all are a fan of the narration but I found it perfectly fine. Maybe some things are read with too much emphasis but overall the tone is serious and works well with the subject matter.

Tragic

Tragic story, an interesting one though, different to the rumours I'd heard, the story isn't what a lot of people think it is, defiantly worth a listen

WOW - A must read

I dont leave reviews that often but i felt compelled with this book. Firstly i really did like the narrator - i found his voice somewhat soothing to be honest and I felt he suited the books subject matter.

On the book itself, I really do feel it is well worth listening too. I found it very well written and i felt as though i got to know some of the people from that dreadful day. It almost felt unreal if im honest. I had to keep reminding myself that it was actually a real story which again made it sadder to listen too.

There were times when i felt truly saddened and indeed i did shed tears. It took me only a few days to listen to this - i couldnt put it down.

These people will stay with me for some time I feel. I really did feel for both the parents of the victims but also i felt for the parents of Dylan and Eric - dreadful though it was, they were someones son's and they had to grieve for them knowing what terrible things they had done.

All in all - i found this so well written. I will be listening to this again in the future

Review

I disliked the authors choice to use teen slang in some passages but overall the book gives a pretty comprehensive look at everything that happened leading up to the event and the fallout afterwards.

Very gripping

I was in hischool when this shooting happend, so for me is still sthe "school shooting".To bad that in the aidiobook the addendim are missing and something that the actual book add on Dylan ends in the Eric life story. minor flaws, Anyway.
The narrator has grat passion and is very good.
