Robert E Lee - A Life
This is an excellent history of Robert E Lee, this book deals with his adult life, from Mexico to his surrender at appamatox court house. Recommended!

one of my favourites. brilliantly researched
one of my favourites. brilliantly researched and written. Highly recommended!
well balanced in approach, and showing many sides to Robert E. Lee.
I was reasonably familiar with his Civil War exploits, but I didn't know anything about his youth, early career, or his fantastic achievements in the Mexican War, which were well covered
I will listen to this again!

Deservedly a hero
A masterful and sympathetic summary of Lee's life. in which were combined military greatness and genuine Christian piety. Possibly no other military leader in history has received the acclaim by the side that defeated him as Lee did, and this in a civil war, the most brutal of all wars. The reading is excellent preventing the extended descriptions of the military campaigns from becoming tedious.

Here’s what you need to think.
I dislike the way that the author keeps telling me what I should be thinking of Robert E Lee. The author seems to think that he has to project his opinion onto every action. Douglas Southall Freeman does not make that assumption of our stupidity and allows us to think for ourselves.

Here indeed is what you need to think.
An interesting early life which is lacking from other commentaries I've read or heard. BUT!
Written in the sycophantic style; if only Lee and Jackson could have cloned themselves and populated the army with their offspring, the south would have won comfortably.
I have no doubt he was a noble and thoughtful man, husband, father and general. But the narrative of the war puts the blame on everybody else but him, exalts him to angelic status and portrays the others as incompetent martinets or trouble makers.
I gave up about a third of the way through, just couldn't stand the patronising narrative and narration any longer.
Some will like it.
