About this listen

Best-selling author of Spilling the Beans, takes her personal journey around the different regions of England. The quintessential Englishwoman Clarissa Dickson Wright takes us on a personal journey through the country of her birth.

From Cornwall to Cumbria, Norfolk to Northumbria she brings her extraordinary knowledge, huge passion, forthright opinions and inimitable wit to the distinctive history and regional character of every corner of England. In her cornucopia of local knowledge she reveals, for example, how Boudicca was the original Essex girl, that Lincolnshire has a coriander crop second only in size to India's, and just why a Cornish pasty should never contain carrots.

As much an entertaining narrative as it is a travel companion, Clarissa's England will amuse, enlighten, surprise and delight all those who listen to it.

Great Book

Another great book by Clarissa although it's more of a companion to her auto biography really, its not one to start off with. If you have read Spilling The Beans and Rifling through my drawers then it really is a must

Interesting, well told

If you could sum up Clarissa's England in three words, what would they be?

Self centred, quirky, interesting.

What does Clarissa Dickson Wright bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She doesn't read particularly well, but the stories are varied.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No thanks.

Any additional comments?

Clarissa Dickson Wright is fascinating, but rather odious. She picks up on interesting facts and has many tales, but I don't believe she was a nice person. On balance, this book confirmed my doubts about her. Personable superficially, but hard and ruthless.

Some interesting bits

I like the idea of a jolly tour around the counties, with a bit of history and quirky stories thrown in. I do like Clarissa, but I found her narration of this book a little stilted considering it's her book. I want to say that I loved the book but somehow it just doesn't flow.

Spiffing stuff on a great journey!

Would you consider the audio edition of Clarissa's England to be better than the print version?

Never read the printed version, but enjoyed Clarissa's delivery.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Clarissa's England?

Her various put downs of Tony Blair...anyone who does that gets my vote!Always interesting yarns on each county and lots that I had never heard before.

Which character – as performed by Clarissa Dickson Wright – was your favourite?

There were too many to mention.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A romp from start to finish, they don't make 'em like her anymore!

Any additional comments?

Very interesting facts & history, always kept fresh, never dull by Clarissa and never by halves...excellent listen and one that I always looked forward to getting back to.Would have loved her at a dinner party, bet she would have been the last to bugger off!

Most enjoyable

Any additional comments?

Most enjoyable account of the different counties of England. I liked how Clarissa spoke about the aspects of each county which I personally did not know. I was educated in many things. However this book is not for those who are anti hunting etc. For me I was able to ignore the references to hunting to be able to take in the rest of the book.

Pompous probably can't spell zeitgeist

I'm so glad I have never met anyone of this woman's peers
Her first book, I quite enjoyed for what is was, a confession of utterly pointless life.
Her Leicester story. Well I don't know why a tabloid never picked this up.
In my opinion disgraceful racist commentary on her getting lost in Leicester
This book is awful, a boring dirge
She name drops constantly, gives plus points to places for having a good shop to buy silver service.
She applauds Eton for turning out drones.
If there ever there is a revolution Clazza 'sic, and her Ilk will be the straws that breaks the Camels back.
Ordinary people don't meet her people
When or if they do, it won't be pretty

An ego trip of the author.

While there are lots of fascinating historical and literary tidbits in the book, "Clarrisa's England" is rambling and chaotic, and the author's neverending comments about her fame and brilliance feel unbearable by the end of the book.
I have never - not once - heard of the author of this book. (I bought this book because it was on sale for £3 and sounded interesting - I am obsessed with regional history.) I was thus confused by statements such as "Most people know who I am" and a seemingly infinite amount of stories about her fame and brilliance. Based on her writing, you'd think the author was a messiah directly responsible for the invention of fire and the wheel.
"Clarissa's England" is, sadly, more of the author's ego trip rather than a celebration of all the diverse beauty and magic of English counties. Very disappointing.
