Summary
She glanced at her phone again. There were appeals from the girls, from her colleagues, a text from Steve reading, with uncharacteristic imperiousness, 'Call me.' She couldn't. She couldn't call anyone....
She leaned forward, gripping the edge of the bench, and stared at the ground. God, she thought, am I losing my mind? Is this what happens when you lose your job?
The day Stacey Grant loses her job feels like the last day of her life. Or, at least, the only life she'd ever known. For who was she if not a City high-flyer, Senior Partner at one of the top private equity firms in London?
As Stacey starts to reconcile her old life with the new - one without professional achievements or meetings but instead long days at home with her dog and ailing mother, waiting for her successful husband to come home - she at least has The Girls to fall back on. Beth, Melissa and Gaby. The Girls, now women, had been best friends from the early days of university right through their working lives, and for all the happiness and heartbreaks in between.
But these career women all have personal problems of their own, and when Stacey's redundancy forces a betrayal to emerge that was supposed to remain secret, their long cherished friendships will be pushed to their limits....

Quite dull
The story doesn’t really go anywhere; the characters are quite unlikeable so I wasn’t that interested in what would happen to them, in fact I kept falling asleep and would have to rewind! However Joanna Trollope writes well, very precise, and the narrator Adjoa Andoh is generally great at different accents (listen to her narrate ‘Americanah!’) so it’s worth it for that.

A massacre of accents
Storyline about friends in the city, could make an interesting movie, but not really something I could sing myself into. Most noticeably, the appalling “American“ accent of the narrator was so distracting, it was hard to concentrate on the dialogue. I can honestly say I have never heard an American accent so all over the place – going from the southwest to the deep south to I don’t know where, and all by the same character. Would have been much more enjoyable without this massacre - might be a good idea just to stick to English and Welsh.

I was waiting for the next chapter.......
Fantastic narrator who made each character really different - as the four main characters were female and the same age, then listening could have been hard work. I really enjoyed this -I dont do chic-lit type books so only bought this as it was a daily deal, and I was slightly nervous as I thought it didn’t look like what I would have expected from Joanna Trollope. There were no Aga’s and labradors (not that I have a problem with either of those), and I thought it was realistic to some extent (I dont work in the city so I cant really tell) but the relationships between the women was interesting although somewhat juvenile. I think they would probably use MumsNet rather than wait for an old Uni friend to be available...... I was left wondering at the end if I hadn’t listened properly and had skipped a chapter, as there wasn’t a real conclusion. But if there is a “Book 2” then I will probably be buying!

A bit of a disappointment
I had eagerly awaited the release of Joanna Trollope's latest audiobook, but sadly and unusually, it was a bit of a let down.
Whilst this story was well-narrated and the main four characters easily identifiable, it didn't really go anywhere.
Joanna Trollope books usually fall into the 'unputdownable' category for me, but I just didn't feel I'd lived the story with the characters or that there was a start, middle or (satisfactory) end.
Emotions seemed muted, scenarios felt predictable and conclusions never happened.
Sorry. I hate to give bad reviews but I hope this gives guidance for potential purchasers of the audiobook.

Good book for holiday reading.
No real plot or story. Good for reading on the beach - not at all challenging!

Enjoyable and apt for International Women's day
Kudos to the narrator for taking on so many characters & doing them so well. A good story with the right balance of wit, humour and a bit of drama. A comfortable story.

Loved it! Perfect for what I needed - very inspiring. As an avid reader of Joanna Trollope, again she has satisfied the macro as well as the minutiae of intelligently relayed narrative, beautifully.

Not up to J T’s usual standard. Too many cliched characters. The narration was complicated by too many poorly delivered accents, spoilt the story for me.
