Summary
What’s the worst betrayal you can imagine? It doesn’t matter what you just answered. Duchess has done something worse.
Before she killed her husband during a frenzy of vampiric bloodlust, he begged her to honor a single request. She failed him, and she’s been paying for that failure for the last 400 years.
But Duchess’ lost love has finally returned to her. Reincarnated as Chan Wei Yong, the former king’s musketeer is now a hardened CIA undercover agent working in the seedy underbelly of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. For people like Duchess and Chan, a happy ending just isn’t in the cards.
Too bad there’s far more at stake than their feelings.
The demon Bael doesn’t care about Duchess’ guilt or Chan’s ugly past. All he cares about is winning the battle against the light. But how can she and Chan wage spiritual warfare against the darkness when they’re both trapped firmly in its hold?

The plot thickens....
The plot is definitely thickening in what is possibly the penultimate book in the series. In fact the book is less about the romance between Duchess and her soul mate and more about the pieces of the puzzle finally slotting into place.
First off, while each book is stand-alone, the series is best read in sequential order for maximum effect. There is an over-riding theme of good versus evil that gains momentum with each additional book. The authors have created a group of 6 vampires who are creature of darkness that represent good. They were selected for darkness but, thanks to the sacrifice of their soulmates whom they kill, are now the warriors of good. They are also part of a legend foretold of the council of 13 that wins against the darkness. The darkness, Bael is trying hard to prevent the soulmates from reconnecting and creates vortexes of evil around the human soulmate of each vampire, intending to kill the human before they can meet. Each book focuses on one couple as the council of 13 is slowly assembled.
Duchess and Chan carry lifetimes of guilt and pain that prevents them from connecting personally but does not prevent them from working together to address the inherent evil that surround them in Kuala Lumpur. They have a lot to work through but are committed to the fight for good. It is clear that the war is imminent.
I enjoyed this book because I have heard the whole series up to now. This book is not the best out of the lot but I attribute that to necessity of lining up the proverbial ducks before the big showdown coming in the last book. I am looking forward to Snag's story. As the oldest vampire, he marks the beginning and rightfully the end of this struggle.

Building
This one is intense you can feel the threads coming together and it just makes me desperate for the last book as this is such a good series. Yes you could listen to just this one and still get what’s going on but the series is definitely worth a listen and it will make this book so much better.
