Summary
Shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2019
From the Orange Prize-winning, internationally best-selling author of The Song of Achilles comes the powerful story of the mythological witch Circe, inspired by Homer's Odyssey.
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe has neither the look nor the voice of divinity and is scorned and rejected by her kin. Increasingly isolated, she turns to mortals for companionship, leading her to discover a power forbidden to the gods: witchcraft.
When love drives Circe to cast a dark spell, wrathful Zeus banishes her to the remote island of Aiaia. There she learns to harness her occult craft, drawing strength from nature. But she will not always be alone; many are destined to pass through Circe's place of exile, entwining their fates with hers. The messenger god, Hermes. The craftsman, Daedalus. A ship bearing a golden fleece. And wily Odysseus, on his epic voyage home.
There is danger for a solitary woman in this world, and Circe's independence draws the wrath of men and gods alike. To protect what she holds dear, Circe must decide whether she belongs with the deities she is born from or the mortals she has come to love.
Breathing life into the ancient world, Madeline Miller weaves an intoxicating tale of gods and heroes, magic and monsters, survival and transformation.

Riveting
Excellent narration of a tale of the Ancient Greek Gods but from a perspective both human and divine. I couldn’t stop listening once I had started.

Amazing
Utterly utterly beautiful. The humanity in this tale of gods is almost edible. I cried on the tube for the love and forgiveness, for the wonderful vision of life’s absurdity and how honesty triumphs over all...

Marvellous narration
I read Miller’s The Song of Achilles on paper and cannot imagine a narrator more suited to Miller’s hard hitting emotional style.
I particularly enjoyed the voices of male deities such as Ayetes and Hermes, which highlighted their combination of intellectual depth and frivolousness from having nothing to lose. That said, it is sometimes difficult to tell between their voices, although that’s hardly caused any confusion as these characters don’t interact with one another.

Exhilarating & brilliant!
One of my favourite audible listens ever! The book is so well written but the reader’s nuanced approach makes it unforgettable. Five out of five.

A beautiful book, beautifully read
I only have a fairly superficial knowledge of Greek myths, have read the Odyssey recently and enjoyed it hugely. This book gives something new, a depth of character and motivation, the nuance of human interaction and interior worlds and it is performed faultless. Along with the delectable descriptions of the natural world and Circes spells I could not fault it.
