About this listen
For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? Why do they play tug-of-war with one dog, while showing their bellies to another? Why are some dogs shy, while others are bold? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand?
Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by award-winning scientist and lifelong dog lover Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.
Rooted in the most up-to-date science on cognition and emotion - fields that have exploded in recent years - Canine Confidential is a wonderfully accessible treasure trove of new information and myth-busting. Peeing, we learn, isn't always marking; grass-eating isn't always an attempt to trigger vomiting; it's okay to hug a dog - on their terms; and so much more. There's still much we don't know, but at the core of the book is the certainty that dogs do have deep emotional lives, and that as their companions we must try to make those lives as rich and fulfilling as possible.

Very interesting
Book has lots of facts that are backed up by studies as well as lots of good observations, written in a very engaging way and I thought the narrator was pretty good too. There’s a good chance I will re-listen to it at some point

Great book.
I loved this book! Marc talks about every possible scenario a dog parent will have thought at one point of another. The book delves into the mind of the dog, quoting many studies that have been done to explain canine behaviour. It has given me a lot to think about and has changed the way I look and treat my furry companions.

Worth a listen
There's some good information in this book. I'd skip the first 3 chapters though. I didn't like the narrator tbh but you get used to him. Perhaps reading it would be better. Still it's definitely worth listening to for free on the membership.

It's different?
This book was not what I was expecting.
It was so much more, it looks at dog's and being a dog owner though the dog's eye's which gives you a far better understanding into why dog's do what they do.
I would say it's a must read for any dog lover..

Annoying narrator but pretty good book
The narrator reads in an irritating tone which is a shame as it could have been far more enjoyable if it had been read well. He’s kind of patronising, like he’s reading a mystical tale to a class of 3 year olds...
I learnt a few things from this book and confirmed other things I knew from similar books. I like the importance Bekoff placed on positive training/teaching methods and treating dogs properly and in line with a dog’s way of thinking and being in the world. The sections on how dogs ‘bridge the ethical gap’ in terms of how humanity treats animals is also very enlightening and an important message to put out there.

Observe /understand - is it K9 play or fight ??!!
👍 brilliant explained K9 body language - subtle play signals used for polite play to continue or be withdrawn by the individual or pack - now I fully understand my pack - identify the instigator of disharmony before play gets out of hand - firm fair timeout or redirection & allow adrenalin to subsidise before allowing play to continue works with children too
