In July 2009, Geraint (Gez) Jones was sitting in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan with the rest of The Firm – Danny, Jay, Toby and Jake, his four closest friends, all junior NCOs and combat-hardened infantrymen. Thanks to the mangled remains of a Jackal vehicle left tactlessly outside their tent, IEDs were never far from their mind. Within days they’d be on the ground in Musa Qala with the rest of 3 Platoon – a mixed bunch of men Gez would die for.
As they fight furiously, are pushed to their limits, hemmed in by IEDs and hampered by the chain of command, Gez starts to wonder what is the point of it all. The bombs they uncover on patrol, on their stomachs brushing the sand away, are replaced the next day. Firefights are a momentary victory in a war they can see is unwinnable. Gez is a warrior – he wants more than this. But then death and injury start to take their toll on The Firm, leaving Gez with PTSD and a new battle just beginning.

Absolutely fantastic book... I’m ex army, and this is the best one.... not by a Rupert, by someone at the tip of the spear!
A real insight into the workings of an infantry man... banter that can only be rivalled by the old guys on the muppets!
Honest and dark, yet funny and caring, caring that can only be explained in this situation! Dark humour that gets you through a tour!
Personally with it being read by the author, gives it depth and a true feeling of expression at what he and his brothers felt at that time!
Warts and all account!!

Gez wasn’t the average crayon eater. Respect mate.
Military banter is the same no matter where or who you serve with, one thing most of us miss.
The descriptions of action are intense and exiting.
Complaining is a squaddies prerogative, but most of it had a point.
The last 1/3 of the book is a tough listen but no less important due to the honesty in which it was written.
Respect from this former Sapper.

Outstanding blunt honest story
This book makes for difficult listening and is by far the best most honest account of a frontline infantryman or any other service arm I have come across.
The story is told with the exact same language used by all infantry soldiers since well forever!
If you are looking for a true war account of Afghan Herrick tours from the Junior Ranks point of view well look no further as this one will fit the bill but beware if you are adverse to colourful language then this one isn’t for you.
As a bonus it is read by the author so all terminology is pronounced correctly which makes a change for a lot of war/military history audio books.

great listen ,sad ,funny,and shocking.
what a book .it's rare to hear the story from the lads on the ground and it's infuriating that they didn't have the right support during and after the war .really opened my eyes.best modern war diary I've read so far.

No less than impressive
What starts as a brutal rant at the conflict in Afghanistan turns into a retelling of an almost unreal tour experienced by Geraint Jones. The final part of the book looks in detail at the long and dark path the author had to go through before realising his PTSD and beginning his road to overcoming it.
The author is also the narrator for this story which is the best way for a book like this to be told. Gripping from start to finish, I really see no negatives in buying this book. I cannot begin to imagine what him and the people around him went through, I can only hope that books like this help those others who find themselves in similar positions.

What a BOOK!!
I laughed, I cried and I thought about my time in Afghanistan!
A truly accurate account of the failings of government and the ludacris bullshit the "leadership" of the British army has sadly become!
A must read by veterans and civilians alike.
10/10!

Eye opening for civilians
This is an excellent and accurate insight into the world of the infantryman, and I’m an infantryman myself having served 12 years in the Royal Irish Regiment. Dark, humorous and unblinkingly honest this presents a side of the military rarely shared with civilians. It presents highs, lows and the mundaneness of infantry life. A must read for all followers of military history and biographies. RIP the fallen.
