About this listen
Brooklyn: the iconic classic. Read by the star of the Oscar and BAFTA-nominated film adaptation, Saoirse Ronan.
The classic novel that inspired the major motion picture.
The prequel to Colm Tóibín's bestselling novel, Long Island.
In a small town in 1950s Ireland Eilis Lacey is one among many women of her generation who cannot find work at home. So, when a job is offered in America, she knows she must leave.
Arriving, alone, at a noisy boarding house in Brooklyn, Eilis can only be reminded of what she has left behind. She is far from home - and homesick. And just as she begins to find a new way of living, and the possibility of companionship, Eilis receives tragic news which sends her back to Ireland.
There she will be confronted by a terrible dilemma - between love and happiness in the land where she belongs and the promises she must keep on the far side of the ocean.
'With this elating and humane novel, Colm Tóibín has produced a masterwork' – Sunday Times
'The most compelling and moving portrait of a young woman I have read in a long time' – Zoë Heller, Guardian
'Magnificent' – Sunday Telegraph

Captivating storytelling
The way the author writes is so exact and the way he talks about inner emotion is so well observed.

Fantastic Irish story telling at its best.
Loved it all. The depth of characters, the story of family, love, home sickness , Brooklyn . Watched the film again which gave great depth to it and loved Julie Walter as the landlady. Just like my Irish grandma. Absolutely pleasure to read and just bought Long Island as it a follow up. Hope this is also made into a film.

Brooklyn - Colm Toibin
I watched the movie first, many years ago, and was excited with Saoirse Ronan (who plays the lead in the movie) was narrating.
It’s a lovely story, deals with home sickness, grief, finding yourself.
The only qualm I have is that thee are sometimes words and sentences deducted from the narration - I was reading the book alongside listening, and there are a few occasions when the narrator misses certain words or sentences (not many and not enough to alter the story line) but thought it was worth mentioning.
Throughly enjoyed that Saoirse Ronan was narrating, it was like watching the movie again.

Magnificent
Beautifully read and a moving account of a young Irish girl's move to the USA.
I don't want to spoil anything, particularly as you can read all about the story elsewhere, I just want to say it is 100% worth a credit.
I also listened to the sequel, Long Island, read by Jessie Buckley. It's definitely worth listening to this first if you intend hearing the latter.

An IrishAmerican story.
I enjoyed the story, the little details, the small inconsequential actions, and the thoughts. The thoughts and feelings of Ellis, and the progression of her life. I really think I know her well, and want her to be happy, because she’s basically a lovely person.

Wonderful
I really loved this - a gently gripping and moving story, beautifully understated writing and quirky and absorbing, truly human characters. And so wonderfully narrated by Saoirse Ronan. I bought the sequel, Long Island the moment I’d finished it.

Sweet but dull
I don't understand the rave reviews, it's very sweet but nothing really happens and it never changes gear or pace? Found it pretty boring
