Summary

The first novel in New York Times best-selling author Cynthia Eden's sizzling Lost series introduces the Last Option Search Team, an elite unit that must protect the only surviving victim of a serial killer.

Ex-SEAL and LOST founder Gabe Spencer is accustomed to the unusual in his job. But when knockout Eve Gray steps into his office, he's rattled. For the mysterious woman is a dead ringer for the heiress thought to be the latest prey of the serial killer who goes by the name Lady Killer.

When Eve awoke in an Atlanta hospital, her past was a blank slate. Then she recognized her own face in the newspaper and vowed to learn the truth. Determined to confront the nightmares hidden in her mind, she never expects to find a partner in Gabe.

As Gabe and Eve work together, their explosive attraction becomes irresistible. Gabe knows that his desire for Eve is growing too strong, bordering on a dangerous obsession, but nothing pulls him away from her. And when another Eve lookalike disappears, Gabe vows to protect Eve at all costs. While Eve may have forgotten the killer in her past, it's clear he hasn't forgotten her.

Could be a lot better

I’m a great fan of Cynthia Eden but this one was a disappointment.

The plot moved painfully slow and for every paragraph progressing the storyline we had pages of the main characters analysing their lustful feelings. The Hero was so overly possessive and aggressive toward anyone showing interest in the heroine that I though his character was better suited to being the serial killer. At one stage he even beat up a suspect who was in handcuffs. Meanwhile the h was unappealing. As an amnesia victim it was difficult for the reader to get to know her, and every hint given about her past made her seem like a mentally unstable and promiscuous spoiled rich girl. It seemed she was more interested in having sex than actually finding out who she really was and I thought wanting sex a few hours after the murder of her only friend was just poor taste. And after visiting the burial site of several murder victims she declared she wanted go drinking and dancing? Hardly endearing. The romance in this book was non existent. This was just insta-lust and nothing else. The two central characters rarely talked or spend time together that didn’t involve having sex or thinking about having sex or almost having sex.

The book contains huge plot holes. The heroine was a dead ringer for a missing socialite who was presumed murdered by a high profile serial killer, and the FBI are still actively investigating. However police trying to find the h's true identity, dismiss this connection because that woman went missing in another state! What! They cannot even make a long distance phone call? E-mail a photo? Then we find that on a small island community, 20 young blonde woman had gone missing over ten years and nobody noticed? I grew up in a small town when one girl went missing, and it was still being talked about 20 years later!

I also found the obvious setting up of future books in the series a bit distracting. Constant reference to other characters and their assorted “issues” was disconcerting and switching to their POV was unnecessary and an obvious attempt to get the reader to buy the follow up books. Meanwhile we barely get to know the lead characters. Lots of vague references to the H's issues and past troubles, lots of hints about the background of the h, but nothing solid to get the reader caring about them both.

This book was so promising and could have been really good. Take away the endless (and mainly pointless) internal musing of all the characters, get rid of the time spend setting up future books, a bit of tweaking and this book would be half the length and twice as good. As it is, I will not be buying the next in the series. Too much sex without love, and not enough storyline and character development.
