About this listen

The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece - a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire.

Through the story of Charles Ryder's entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities.

At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh's early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity.

Critic reviews

"Waugh's most deeply felt novel... Brideshead Revisited tells an absorbing story in imaginative terms...Mr. Waugh is very definitely an artist, with something like a genius for precision and clarity not surpassed by any novelist writing in English in his time." ( New York Times)

Truly, a beautiful classic piece of writing.

Truly, a beautiful classic piece of writing. If you're looking to be immersed in a tale from a different time, fall in love with its characters, and most likely even cry a little – this book's for you!

Jeremy Irons also gives a flawless performance narrating the story. He tends to change his voice ever so slightly to accommodate the character and it's absolutely fascinating to listen to. His voice captivates you – honestly, I'd even listen to him read his grocery lists and absolutely love every second of it.

Definitely recommend!

Beautiful book beautifully read

This is wonderfully read and the book itself is a modern classic. The production is let down by some blips and bumps, presumably due to lack of post production processing....but that is occasional, though annoying when it does occur.

Brideshead Revisited revisited

This book was part of my youth and teenage years and yes I did name one of my bears Aloysius ( and unfortunately he was not as elegant as Sebastian’s )
I remembered this book with fondness and that hasn’t diminished. The narration was excellent and of course brought back memories of the TV show
All in all a great listen

Fantastic and moving narration.

I had read the book many years ago, and was a fan of the TV series too so thought I would give the audio book a whirl. I am so glad I did. Moving, evocative and beautifully read by Jeremy Irons, I can’t recommend highly enough!

Sublime

Jeremy Irons brings this tale to a whole new level- each character especially the women is voiced with such emotional connection. Sad to have reached the end.

Beautifully done

Not much needs to be said about the book, it's a classic for a reason and the writing is beautiful. An obvious and perfect choice of narrator. I could probably listen to J Irons read out the phone book, but this book and his voice are a fantastic combination.

Delicious, Regretful, Sublime

Not so keen on Iron's female character voices, but otherwise sublime! Soak in exquisite melancholy.
