Summary

So many people wonder what borderline personality disorder is all about. Well, the truth is that this is a diagnosis that has been quite difficult for medical professionals to pinpoint or even understand. Because of the complexity of the disease, it has been difficult to successfully treat it.

However, there are new insights about the disorder that has contributed greatly to the new and even more effective treatment options. This is what has made the prognosis of BPD promising. In fact, when one gets the right support, they will learn how to regulate their overwhelming emotions, and stop their destructive behavior so that they can enjoy all that life has to offer.

What is interesting is that when someone received a diagnosis of BPD a couple of decades ago, they felt as though they had been thrown in a dungeon of life imprisonment. The good news is that research has shown a possibility of people with BPD functioning better. In fact, so many people with this condition have been shown to cope with so well and eventually drop the diagnostic label.

The other important change that is critical to note is that BPD is now easily diagnosed and treated in teenagers. It was only until recently that mental health professionals were able to embrace the diagnosis of this disorder in people under the age of 18 - even though the symptoms were prominent in adolescence or even earlier in their life. In fact, according to mental professionals, there is need to conduct early diagnosis for a better chance to treat and manage the disease in the long-term. This also greatly lowers the chance of the patient having suicidal behaviors.

But what about the stigma that such people have in the society?

Well, if you ask anyone with BPD, they will tell you that often, people refer to them as selfish, clingy and manipulative. The truth is, what most of us fail to realize is that people with BPD often go through extreme challenges daily and labelling them in this manner is unfair.

If you have someone with BPD in your school, family, neighborhood, or any other place, one thing that is important is for you to offer them support. That is the least you can do. Think of them as people with a third-degree burn - over 90 percent of their bodies lacks emotional skin. They are constantly in agony at the slightest movement or touch. This is how you can start putting yourself in their shoes. When you do this, you will begin to realize that what they go through is quite unimaginable.

What this means is that people with BPD lack the ability to regulate their emotions, thoughts and actions. The exact word you can use in a “Dysregulation disorder.” This is a name that is less stigmatizing.

There are instances when they feel non-existent and not sure of their identity. For instance, they may feel as though they do not really know who they are as a person or even what they value or believe in. In this audiobook, you will learn more about:

When Dr. Hawking's voice machine got a girlfriend

Bad computerised narration with no or little regard to syntax makes this a very difficult listen.
