Summary

Napoleon has been defeated at Waterloo, and the ensuing peace brings with it both the desertion of nearly half of Captain Aubrey's crew and the sudden dimming of Aubrey's career prospects in a peacetime navy. When the Surprise is nearly sunk on her way to South America - where Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are to help Chile assert her independence from Spain - the delay occasioned by repairs reaps a harvest of strange consequences.

The South American expedition is a desperate affair; and in the end Jack's bold initiative to strike at the vastly superior Spanish fleet precipitates a spectacular naval action that will determine both Chile's fate and his own.

Well it's all over.

Finishing a great book series always makes me sad, this was one of the best. Fantastic, we need more movies!

Another cracking tale

Sadly the last in the series of great sea adventures from O'Brian with excellent narration from Ric Jerrom.

A great series

This is the second time of listening to the OBrian books, so well read by Ric Jerron.
Will be listening again for third time in the not too distant future.

A fitting end ... Ish

I very much enjoyed this book but the pleasure is tinged with a little sadness knowing that it is the last full Aubrey Maturin novel. well read as always and very much makes you think that even after all this time, perhaps especially, a movie sequel with the same cast could be excellent.

Tour de Force

So sad to have reached the end of this wonderful series, quite simply a tour de force - especially this audible version where the brilliance of Ric Jerrom’s narration matches that of Patrick O’Brian’s writing.

Reliable good listening

It's not the most exciting of the series but still very enjoyable. And Jack gets what he's been longing for.
