Summary

August 1144. Osbern de Lench is known far and wide as a hard master whose temper is perpetually frayed. After his daily ride to survey his land, his horse returns to the hall riderless, and the lifeless body of the lord is found soon after.

Was it the work of thieves or something closer to home? With an heir who is cast in the same hot-tempered mould, sworn enemies for neighbours and something amiss in the relationship between Osbern and his wife, Undersheriff Hugh Bradecote, the wily Serjeant Catchpoll and apprentice Walkelin have suspects aplenty.

Really enjoyable

Matt Addis does a really great job of narrating these books. He alone makes listen really worthwhile. In this outing, Undersheriff Bradecote and Sergeant Catchpoll must solve the death of Osbern de Lench, a hard master with a permanent bad temper. Because of this, there are any number of suspects, including his wife and his equally bad-tempered son. Can Bradecote and Catchpoll, along with Wakelin, sift the clues and find the culprit? Of course they can, and it makes of great listening.

Excellent as always.

I have all the audio books to date, and I saved this one until after Christmas because I wanted to listen to every word. Narration just perfect, always convincing. Start a typing Sarah, I’m ready when you are.

Entertaining

An interesting plot, with plenty of twists, engaging characters and a good dollop of historical research stirred in. This is perfect for lovers of gentle, medieval mysteries. Matt Addis’s narration brings it all to life with his enchanting voice.

Bit of whiplash with all the twists and turns

Well crafted and narrated as ever.
Enough twists and turns to be a rollercoaster.
One of the most interesting characters I’ve seen written.
I started this one after finishing the last and am already champing at the bit to start the next.
