About this listen
Family ties can be deadly
In the shadow of the Pentland Hills, a man has been callously struck down in front of his home. Tyre marks suggest it was no accidental hit-and-run. Somebody wanted him dead and as the man fights for every breath, they might still get their wish.
Grappling with the demons he thought he could leave behind after months away on enforced leave, D.S. Malkie McCulloch resists pressure from his superiors to pass the case on to the road policing unit, convinced that whoever was behind the wheel will be waiting for the chance to finish the job.
With the help of his partner DCI Steph Lang, Malkie uncovers evidence that leads him to a former soldier suffering with PTSD. Risking his already tarnished career – and his life – he must unpick a complex web of family ties, deception, and greed to reveal the secrets at the heart of the case. When the former soldier decides to take justice into his own hands, and a key witness reveals information that implicates somebody within the police, can Malkie piece together the truth before the body count soars?
The first in an utterly gripping new Scottish crime thriller series featuring DS Malkie McCulloch, a brilliantly complex detective who will risk everything to protect the innocent. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, JM Dalgliesh and JD Kirk.

written as "tell" not "show" so it was a bit boring in places. saved by A King's narration which was excellent as usua

Good Start
Pretty good start to a new series. Lots going on plot wise and characters with all sorts of flaws.
I did pause at the beginning when the back story of Malkie was he was ‘damaged’ et cetera because I was expecting something different for a change, but I was glad I persevered.
Steph is ace and I would have had to slap Malkie several times if I was her. There is also a lot more to come out too regarding her background so that will hopefully be interesting.
The story arc that delves into PTSD of an ex soldier is well done and really did ensure we felt the utter angst and despair felt in addition to other symptoms. It was all aided by the very talented Angus King who really does get into character so well. This makes audiobooks so powerful at times.
Looking forward to the next book.

Nice Start to a Possibly Great Series
As Police procedurals go the characters are the pretty standard flawed individuals we see in most books but its the writing that puts this book a notch above the usual. The way PTSD was handled was so insightful and well written that you really felt for the character. The back story of all the main characters wasn't, as is so often the case, all revealed in the first book so this one leaves you looking forward to the next in the series to see what's made them who they are.
Doug Sinclair is definitely an author to look out for in the future.

Good performance of a mediocre story
Angus King's storytelling is as always impeccable and is the main reason I persevered with this book.
The main character's crippling self-pity although understandable at the start of the story soon became irritating as every decision was overanalyzed leading to quite unbelievable plot turns.
The plot was pretty predictable to the point of wishing the main characters would hurry up and solve this to finish the book.
Ok first book, but the main character's self-pity really needs dialed down.

What a wet and tedious leaf of a defective!!!
Oh dear, did I dislike this Malkie bloke. He wallows ceaselessly in grief and self-imposed guilt and shame, sees nothing clearly and blames himself for everything. He makes rash promises he can’t keep. He fails his poor father. The first timid, fragile pretty little female quickly has him wrapped around her little finger. On his second day back after extended leave, he goes off on private business for several hours without telling anyone, leaving his colleagues doing all his work, not knowing where the heck he is (don’t know about you, but I’d have been fired on the spot from any job I’ve ever done for doing that.)
He repeatedly ignores direct orders, constantly lets his “inner idiot” voice speak for him, and is so indecisive it made me want to shoot him. Honestly, he took several pages to decide whether to open a door or not. I wouldn’t want him to have to make a split second decision to save my life!! And every little mishap was “likely to break him”. What a wuss. In the end I didn’t care whether he made a difference or not, I just wanted him to stop his constant moaning.
Yep, you’re right, I won’t be buying another in this series.
All that said, Angus King’s narration was terrific.

It's okay.....
A bit too long and a bit too much sentimentality at times. I also thought the "broken promises" refrain became quite tedious by the last few chapters. New author to me and I bought it mostly because I think Angus King can make anything sound good and it proved to be correct again, without his ability I don't think I would've got to the end.

An excellent listen!
I really enjoyed this book. This is new author to me but I'll definitely be back for more. Complex characters and relationships, written with real empathy for sufferers of PTSD and depression. It is refreshing to see male characters express emotions. The dynamics between Malky and Steph were great, and I can see more developing in her backstory. The icing on the cake was the wonderful Angus King's excellent performance breathing life into the characters.
