Summary

Imprisoned for treason, Charlie Muffin hunts for a way out - by crossing a line.

After a trumped-up trial, Charlie Muffin lands in jail for treason - ready to learn the secrets of his fellow inmate, a convicted British traitor. Nobody expected KGB agents to stage a prison break to free their man. Charlie faces another choice: go to Moscow to complete his assignment or face 40 long years in prison. It doesn’t take him long to decide.

Charlie doesn’t have the full picture, of course, which is the way of espionage. But Charlie doesn’t regret his Iron Curtain escape, as it leads him to Natalia Fedova, the KGB interrogator assigned to determine if his defection is genuine or staged. For anyone else, the risk would be suicidal. But for Charlie, the greatest danger may be falling in love.

Charlie delivers again!

As always with these books it's people doing bad things for good reasons. The writing is excellent as is the reader. Thoroughly entertaining with a twist.

As good as it gets

What a discovery. I’m working my way through these and they are just fantastic. Easily in the same league as Deighton and Le Carre.

Best ending so far

An enjoyable series and just when I was wavering this appears. It can be read singly and little is lost of the punch

Never Mind the Bolsheviks

Another excellent gripping tale, so well narrated. Complex and complicated, with depth and turbulations enough to satisfy anyone who loves puzzles. Charlie is in Russia, but extra detail would be nice of how he gets out of England with no paperwork, even in those days. How does he maintain his dishevelled appearance? Boycotting showers?

The editing leaves a lot to be desired. It is disconcerting to be in full flow of dialogue or plot, then to have such sudden changes of subject where insufficient time gaps are left to indicate the change.

Am really enjoying this series; so much more intelligent and mentally challenging than many current books, requiring actual input from the listener to decipher the clues along with Charlie, which I find very satisfying. GOOD STORY
