Summary

Delving into issues of family, class and loyalty, Black Rain Falling is a stunning crime novel that asks how far one should go to protect those they love.

On the Caribbean island of Camaho, forensics expert Michael 'Digger' Digson is in deep trouble.

His fellow CID detective Miss Stanislaus kills a man in self-defence - their superiors believe it was murder, and Digger is given just six weeks to prove his friend is innocent.

While the authorities bear down on them, Digger and Miss Stanislaus investigate a shocking roadside murder, the first tremors of a storm of crime and corruption that will break over Camaho at any moment.

Quite brilliant.

The plot, the characters and the reading are all excellent. One of the few audio books I have listened to twice - and enjoyed just as much second time round.

I fear Jacob Ross may not give his main character - Digger- many more outings (although I may be misinterpreting the hints in the text) so enjoy while you can.

Caribbean Crime Fiction!

Heavily anchored in the Caribbean - its history, geography, topographies, social and geo-political realities, folkore and ways of being, seeing and understanding - this gripping, unpredictable novel is extraordinary. Wonderful writing, unforgettable characters, and great politics = Black Rain Falling is sheer brilliance. Jacob Ross' third novel is spellbinding and has me hunting down everything else he's ever written! Lovers of Caribbean writing should not miss this, nor mystery/crime regulars, but all fans of great storytelling need Black Rain Falling.

A slice of raw West Indian life

If Missa Digger Digson of San Andrews CID arrests y'arse, you'z in trouble - even if you'z a fella officer of the law. Digger prowls over the sun-splattered drug-ridden island of Camaho, delivering his brand of West Indian justice. His bosses are riled by his methods, his fella officers try to maim him and his women try to make sense of what he's looking for - criminals and causes mainly.
The convoluted plot involves various police and the Minister of Justice trying to pin a murder charge on his partner, the immaculate Miss Stanislaus, and a drug ring that enslaves young boys on the island. It's well conjured but standard police procedual fare, you might think. But where this book stands out is in its gritty and convincing plunge into the culture and life of the WIndies - the bedrock the tourists never see.
The Times praised Jacob Ross's authentic dialogue, but the characters he brings to life do justice to it - West Indian justice... Digger Digson-style. Ben Onwukwe deserves huge credit for his reading of it and every scrap of patois is wonderfully rendered and easy to understand, even for us fair-skinned fellas. The Audible book I've enjoyed most this year.

WONDERFUL book! great plot..thoughtful commentary

Very evocative of the island. Doesn't shy away from the important issues, but always handled with love. the accent was pretty good on the whole..only if you're from Grenada will you notice when it strays occasionally but it's a fab book..great for die hard crime readers but also those new to the genre.. because it packs in a whole lot more!

Couldn’t stop listening but didn’t want it to end

Outstanding! Brilliant, intricate plotting with wonderful characters. Digger and Miss Stanislaus are a formidable duo. The dialogue is sharp as is the humour. The narration is excellent. I really hope there is another on the way.
