Summary

When PI Varg Veum is approached to find a missing girl by a half sister he barely knew, his investigation takes him deep into the dark web and some personal history he'd rather forget....

Varg Veum receives a surprise visit in his office. A woman introduces herself as his half sister, and she has a job for him. Her goddaughter, a 19-year-old trainee nurse from Haugesund, moved from her bedsit in Bergen two weeks ago. Since then no one has heard anything from her. She didn't leave an address. She doesn't answer her phone. And the police refuse to take her case seriously. Veum's investigation uncovers a series of carefully covered up crimes and pent-up hatreds, and the trail leads to a gang of extreme bikers on the hunt for a group of people whose dark deeds are hidden by the anonymity of the internet. And then things get personal....

Chilling, shocking and exceptionally gripping, Big Sister reaffirms Gunnar Staalesen as one of the world's foremost thriller writers.

Some nice twists

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't a page turner for me but the story was good, characters good, performance good...

Thoroughly enjoyable Nordic crime thriller

First, let me say, I love Norway, it's a beautiful country that my husband and I toured many years ago on our motorbikes. The irony, therefore, of a biker gang ripping its way through this story, the first Gunnar Staalesen novel I've come across, didn't pass me by. Staalesen skilfully narrates and evokes the darkening landscape, and story, through which P.I. Varg Veum travels. Veum is commissioned by his half-sister Norma, whom he's never met before, to find her goddaughter, Emma, a missing student nurse. During the course of this investigation, an old, half forgotten, cruel crime, comes to light, along with some dark family secrets. Five stars, excellent story, beautiful writing, and the narrator is spot on.

gripping

I pride myself on working the end out but, I'm happy to say I didn't in this book. I couldn't wait to get through it as it was gripping, keeping intrigue and suspense.
