About this listen
From the hosts of hit podcast Call Your Girlfriend comes the bible on how to keep each other close.
A New York Times bestseller
Close friendships are the key to happiness - but we don't talk enough about what it takes to nurture them for the long haul.
Telling the story of their own ten-year, complex, loving friendship, Aminatou and Ann share hard-won wisdom with honesty, hilarity and compassion. They've weathered life-threatening health scares, long-distance living, and one unfortunate Thanksgiving dinner eaten in a parking lot. And they know: the most important part of a Big Friendship is investing in each other again and again.
This is a testament to the power of society's most underappreciated relationship and a compelling story of how it can survive, thrive and become a life-affirming bond.

A wonderful book on friendship
Loved this book! Great to hear the authors' learnings on their own journey with each other over the last decade and also all the contributing research on this wonderful topic. Deep and intimate platonic friendship is so often overlooked because society places so much more importance and focus on other types of relationships. We don't celebrate friendship anniversaries like we do in romantic partnerships, so we have to create these milestones and rituals for ourselves. Remembering the day we first met is key for me, for example. I also thought it was interesting what they say about how we deal with the end of friendships. Ultimately when romantic relationships end, there's a safety in choosing to de-escalate to friendship after so there's a framework available there for people to stay in your life. Whereas when close friendships end they sometimes cut deeper than romantic break ups because you can't de-escalate to "just friends" because you already were. There's no fallback plan. And there's little to no help on how to deal and grieve the end of a close friendship. This book gives a lot of practical advice, stories and research into all aspects of friendship. It was lovely to read! "When you find a Big Friendship, hold on to it, invest in it, stretch for it. Showing up in good times and in bad is the only way to stay in it. Make a decision to create a world in which Big Friendships are valued as the identity-shaping life-altering relationships they truly are" 👭👬👫

Interesting
I enjoyed this book however it doesn't offer that much advice on how to keep a friendship going bar setting the intention to and working on it. On repairing their own friendship the authors just describe that they went to therapy. None the less their story of friendship was interesting. Would still recommend.

A fresh take on friendship
I've always valued friendship highly in my life, and this was a wonderful validation of something I've long felt. Aminatou and Ann really address some important points about the joys and difficulties of a friendship that is high profile and highly prioritised in each other's life. A worthwhile read for anyone who loves their friends!

Between the head and the heart
This story helped me understand so much about aspects of friendships I didn't know intellectually but felt emotionally.
