About this listen

Bisexuality is the largest sexual minority in the world and the least well understood. This book sets out to answer some of the questions that many people have about bisexuality.

In Bi, Julia Shaw explores how people have defined and measured bisexuality during its long and important history. She looks at behavioural bisexuality in animals, and investigates whether there is a bi gene. She introduces some famous bi activists and scholars whom everyone should know. She examines the latest research on bisexual kids, parents and grandparents, and explores bisexual identities across the lifespan. She asks why so few bisexual people are out, and examines the mental and physical health consequences of this. She also questions societal reactions to bisexuality (are bi people more promiscuous? No). She explains the visual language of bisexuality, about bi visibility on screen and the colourful world of bisexual communities.

This book aims to demystify bisexuality and celebrate it. Today, most bisexual activists and researchers define bisexuality as attraction to more than one gender, and this is a book for anyone whether they identify as bisexual, plurisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, polysexual, fluid, unlabelled, any related label or who just wants to know more.

Listen it, even if you're heterosexual

A very informative book about bisexuality, and sexuality in general. I'd recommend this book even if you're not bisexual because it's quite eye-opening, how far we are from accepting others' identities and sexuality.

Amazing

We’re often invisible so to have a book specifically about Bi people is pretty special. Thank you Dr Julia. I recommended this to a Bi book club at work. I hope they enjoy it too!

fantastic

what a listen, so many facts and turning over my bisexuality in ways I had not thought. A much need listen/read to anyone who wants to study queer theory, essential for anyone wanting to know bi theory. I was engaged from start to finish. plus I felt sean when she said "I clocked her as bi because of her purple streaks"!

Audiobook narrated by the author.

A comprehensive summary and discussion on the many facets of bisexuality. Shaw guides the reader through the history and definition of the orientation, discusses the current challenges faced by bi- and multi-sexual people and the various intersectional points.

- This book appears very thorough as a review of bisexual history and talking points. It does not particularly cover any new ground but it does ask questions about the future based on past and present research and experience.

- As a bisexual person, it is both very obvious and also wonderful that this book was written by another bisexual. I felt so affirmed that someone put into coherent words the feelings I have about my sexuality.

- Despite the detail included in the book, at no point did it feel like an academic textbook. Yes, studies are mentioned but they are explained and I think someone with very little grasp of scientific research would be able to enjoy the book just fine.

A really affirming and interesting book. I would recommend to those who enjoy nonfiction queer books and wish to expand their knowledge of multisexuality.

Good introduction if you ignore the last chapters

A straightforward introduction to bisexuality and some of the issues involved with being bi. The chapter on global issues surrounding sexuality was especially good.

However I felt the section on threesomes and consensual non-monogamy was too much of a tangent and only loosely related to bisexuality - it would have been better to have a chapter on, say, 'how to address biphobia in daily life'. It also means that I am unable to recommend this book to more conservative family members, as although they can just about deal with people being bi, having a whole section on "titillating" threesomes is beyond the pale for many in my parent's generation. I am still trying to find a book about bisexuality that explains it in terms that older generations can process without prejudice, and this is not it - it's very much for a gen Z audience. For me the section on threesomes just paradoxically reinforces the false prejudice that somehow bi people can't be in a committed monogamous relationship, despite the explanations elsewhere in the book to the contrary.

Otherwise a decent listen, and excellent narrating by the author.

In Time...

I have just discovered that I am bisexual in my 50s. It was a real blindsided revelation and I was really looking for literature to help me navigate this part of me.

This book came along and I felt seen and known to myself. The content and narrator gave me something to hold onto.

I recommend this book to everyone. Understanding is everything.

This book came in time for me.
