Summary

Integrating the latest in attachment theory and research into the use of EMDR.

Much has been written about trauma and neglect and the damage they do to the developing brain. But little has been written or researched about the potential to heal these attachment wounds and address the damage sustained from neglect or poor parenting in early childhood. This book presents a therapy that focuses on precisely these areas. Laurel Parnell, leader and innovator in the field of eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), offers us a way to embrace two often separate worlds of knowing: the science of early attachment relationships and the practice of healing within an EMDR framework. This beautifully written and clinically practical book combines attachment theory with EMDR to teach therapists a new way of healing clients with relational trauma and attachment deficits.

EMDR is a powerful tool for catalyzing integration in an individual across several domains, including memory, narrative, state, and vertical and bilateral integration. In Laurel Parnell's attachment-based modifications of the EMDR approach, the structural foundations of this integrative framework are adapted to further catalyze integration for individuals who have experienced non-secure attachment and developmental trauma.

Great introduction to attachment focussed EMDR

I enjoyed the client case study’s which really brought the underlying theory to life. It’s something I will incorporate into my own EMDR practice.

Great book for clients and therapists alike

As an EMDR therapist I've listened to all of Laurel Parnell's books and I know AF-EMDR is like the holy grail of her work. What I learnt from this book wasn't as much as I thought in terms of content, and that's a good thing because it took the mysticism out of AF EMDR and made me realise that it's only very subtle tweaks to the 8 phase standard protocol. It's helped me to learn that attachment trauma isn't a big scary thing and that DID is a totally separate problem (although this no doubt stems from attachment wounding) but it helped me to realise how much attachment wounding is a common experience in our clients and I now feel more confident as a therapist to go to the earlier attachment trauma memories. Essentially this book has taught me everything I need to know about resource figures and that's the only difference but there are so many good learning points and creative suggestions. So if you're an EMDR therapist, don't worry as you know most of it already, this book just gives a few 'pro tips' to add to what you already do. For clients, this will be a great way of understanding what you need and also how emdr can help you to health the early attachment wounds and the case studies at the end are amazing.

Accessible read

A fantastic introduction to emdr for clients who present with more complex difficulties. Recommended for this familiar with emdr and wanting to use it with more complex clients presenting with relational difficulties. A fuve star listen due to the pace, presentation and level of detail.

Great book to explore EMDR possibilities further

The book is written wonderfully . It definitely reflects the therapeutic reality that the great majority of our patients are complicated cases. They can not be treated using a standart EMDR protocol only and requires extensive preparation.
The narrators voice is soft and calm to listen, although a little bit longer pauses after paragraphs and chapters could be beneficial for reflection on information heard.

one tone

find it very boring and difficult to follow, the narrator had a very monotone voice, which made it very difficult to maintain focus and not get distracted. which is a shame because the material was interesting and esucational
