Summary

Making eye contact with a killer wasn’t exactly how Bradley Danforth had planned to start his day. As an accountant, he craved structure and routine. What he hadn’t anticipated was being part of a real-life murder mystery with him cast in the starring role.

Death and sorrow were part of Max Donohue’s job description, leaving the detective hardened after years on the job. On his latest case, he’s the one stuck protecting the only witness in a sadistic homicide.

One death becomes two...then three. And soon Max and Bradley find themselves playing a deadly game of cat and mouse. Can Max save Bradley from the clutches of a serial killer? Or will the killer finish what he started?

At a Stranger’s Mercy is the first installment of a continuing series featuring the same two characters. It’s a suspenseful murder mystery that depicts detailed crimes, strong language, and adult situations. While this series will include a romance, it’s a slow burn that develops throughout the series.

Brilliant

I absolutely loved this book! I was drawn in from the first chapter and had chewed my nails to the quick by the epilogue! Max and Bradley are both well drawn main characters and brilliantly brought to life by narrator Kenneth Obi. I adored the quiver in Bradley's voice, the growl of Max and the sheer evil and menace of the serial killer.

The twists and turns to get to the (final) denouement are so well-crafted and obviously much research has gone into making sure procedure is correct.

I already own both ebook and audiobook for the continuation of the series, and have my fingers firmly crossed for the development of a (romantic) relationship between Bradley and Max.

New to me author but not for long.

Wow the suspense of the serial killer getting to find out at the end had me guessing the whole way through. The very very slow burn of Brad the Accountant and Max the homicide Detective was well written, can't wait to continue their journey. Loved Kenneth Obi's narration

Editing poor

The sound editing is poor - words are cut off a lot which becomes annoying but the story was good.

Beyond amazing!

I’m not even finished listening to At a Stranger’s Mercy yet but oh my goodness what I have listened to started amazing and just keeps getting better. I seriously loved Brittany Cournoyer’s book when I first read it and when I saw that Kenneth Obi was narrating it I was excited. He’s definitely my top narrator and I knew he would do the novel justice.

I wasn’t wrong on that. Kenneth Obi brings all the characters to life. Both Bradley and Max are voiced even better than how they sounded in my head when I was reading the book. The stranger is brought to life in a very chilling way - Bradley was voiced amazingly to show me how terrifying he was from the first moment he’s seen. Sometimes I can get easily distracted when listening to audiobooks - and I use them to keep me engaged when doing things that don’t need my whole concentration. At a Stranger’s Mercy doesn’t let me do either of these things. When I’m listening to this my whole attention and focus is on the words I’m hearing - just like I was when reading the book. A thoroughly gripping story with characters that have made me care for what happens to them. A beyond 5* listen for me and one of my top listens from Kenneth Obi (and this is hard to narrow down!).
