About this listen
What's a duke to do, when the girl who's perfectly wrong becomes the woman he can't live without?
Griffin York, the Duke of Halford, has no desire to wed this season - or any season - but his diabolical mother abducts him to "Spinster Cove" and insists he select a bride from the ladies in residence. Griff decides to teach her a lesson that will end the marriage debate forever. He chooses the serving girl.
Overworked and struggling, Pauline Simms doesn't dream about dukes. All she wants is to hang up her barmaid apron and open a bookshop. That dream becomes a possibility when an arrogant, sinfully attractive duke offers her a small fortune for a week's employment. Her duties are simple: Submit to his mother's "duchess training"…and fail miserably.
But in London, Pauline isn't a miserable failure. She's a brave, quick-witted, beguiling failure - a woman who ignites Griff's desire and soothes the darkness in his soul. Keeping Pauline by his side won't be easy. Even if Society could accept a serving girl duchess - can a roguish duke convince a serving girl to trust him with her heart?

The narration spoilt it for me
What could have been a fun story was so let down by an American trying to do a British accent. The pronunciation of words were so jarring I couldn’t wait for the book to be over.

errors and mispronunciations
Too many USA errors. Words like aught instead of nought, wrong foods, etc. And another narrator whose regional accents suddenly drop into a hint of an American accent instead.

Ruined by Narrator
Its a real shame that a very good story line is ruined by the horrible narration. Reading other reviews, some people have no problem with an American narrator trying to do a "stiff upper lip" english accent. If she thinks this is what people talked like she has a problem. The upper class may have thought they were superior but they could not have talked in this "plum in the mouth way". She also got so many words and pronunciations wrong that it really gets to you over the 10 hour journey. The story is good. Tess Dare has even worked out a happy ending in a realistic way, rather than suppose that "society" will accept a serving girl into their elite ranks. Such a shame about the narration.

Loved the story
I loved this story--I think this is one of my favourite Spindle Cove stories. Griff is wonderful and Pauline is thoroughly likeable. Griff's mother amused me too and there's some really heart-breaking and strong, sexy moments. Whilst I enjoyed most of the performance, there was some odd pronunciations which a native Brit will hear. Vauxhall being pronounced Voh-hall was one of the worst. It's pronounced Voxhall by Londoners usually. That said the 'A's were nicely pronounced which I often find are weak when the narrator isn't a native Brit. For those who aren't British listeners, I suspect you'll enjoy this very much.

Enjoyable, but the narrator is annoying
As is often the case with these books, narrators take on some funny pronunciations when they're reading "posh" people, such is the case with this narrator. The regional accents I have no experience of, but when she reads the aristocrats, she has some very odd pronunciations! I'm relistening this book again and it's annoying me enough to write a review.
For example, I find it hard to believe that any British person doesn't know that "Vauxhall" is pronounced "Vox-hall", but no for some reason in this book it is "vo-hall". I remember the first time I listened to this book I was way through it before I realised what she was supposed to be saying!
Then there are some very odd long "a"'s in there, they were earlier on in the book and I can't remember them off the top of my head now, but they make your spine crawl. Whilst I know that posh Southerners use a long "a", it's not in every single word that has one!
Then there' the often mispronounced "blackguard" as "black-guard" instead of "blaggard", again, I'm surprised that considering the number of people involved in recording it that someone doesn't think "oh that sounds like that word blaggard, that must be how it's spelled"... but no..
I'd still recommend the book because it completes the series, but this is one of the less enjoyable narrations.

Lust and laughter
A great listen, I giggled out loud, good story at a great pace, kept the tale going at a trot. Tessa Dare always delivers but this is one of my favourites, steamy and witty at the same time,

Loved The Story
Really enjoyed the story. Just enough raunchy in with the romance. Was thrown with the Narraters awful “posh” accent though. Some of her pronunciation is very weird and annoying! But, I was able to stick with it until the end.

Hate Narration
I believe narrator is American and hard to listen to at times. Not her fault but no English narrator would pronounce Vauxhall so badly.Might seem pedantic but the Home counties girl has the strangest accent.

Another book let down be the narrator
This was a delightful audio book with an interesting plot which was badly let down by the strangled voice and poor diction of the narrator. The narrator seemed to be trying too hard to go for upper crust accents but kept letting themselves down by poor pronunciation and completely incorrect was of saying things like Vauxhall and cravat to name just two. Pauline sounded as though she came from Australia rather than Sussex. Very disappointing.
