Summary
Like so many of the most popular classic novels, it's Tolstoy's delicate and insightful exploration of what it means to be human that makes Anna Karenina such a valuable work. There's no denying that it transcends time to touch the hearts of contemporary listeners.
Anna Karenina seems to have everything - beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son. But she feels that her life is empty until the moment she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky.
Translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude.

Anna Karenina
I tried to read this book many years ago and gave up (found names were daunting) so when I saw this in the sale thought I would give it another try. I am so glad I did. The narrator makes it come alive. The story is so gripping that I actually waited outside a customers premises after a long drive, just to find out what happened. Well worth the money and I have no hesitation in recommending this book.

Narrator shines
Engaging, philosophical, important, and only elevated by David Horovitch's brilliant narration. I almost want to re-read the whole book once again!

A really special gift!
On re-reading ‘Anna Karenina’ I find that it’s really about the emotional and spiritual journey of Lievin!
This is a real gift from the ‘included’ catalogue: I would probably not have bothered with it otherwise but this translation and reading are quite wonderful. AI found the Thandiwe Newton version of ‘war and Peace’ impossible to listen to because to my taste she really hams it up - acts it rather than simply letting the text soeak for itself, and it’s a very thin line between her style and the more dynamically nuanced one of this reader who is in any case more experienced. When you’re in for the long haul like this you need that extra bit of restraint so that you don’t end up with ‘loud and very loud’.
This is a rally special gift.

A classic
Greater classic that is densely packed. Book that requires another read. Also a book that should be red by everyone.

A Classic Epic everyone should read
This story is just as relevant and meaningful to today and I'm sure many a modern tale has been based on it. I particularly enjoyed learning a bit about Russian peasants and farming albeit from a rather romantic and simplistic view, as well as the Russian aristocrasy. Overall a brilliant cautionary tale for anyone.

Will change your life
it was phenomenal. It gets a little heavy at times on the farming talk, but stick with it and it'll change your world view on love and all things relationship

somebody needs to work on the modulation
it's obviously a classic and is read well...accept when the thoughts are whispered...
I appreciate the need to differentiate the internal and external dialogue, but if you're doing that, can you PLEASE increase the recording volume so the listeners don't have to keep turning up the volume to hear and then go deaf when the dialogue transfers between the characters.
Also, towards the end, it seems that the "translation" seems to suffer. especially if you don't understand French!
