Summary

Outside, Anika Dragomir is all lip gloss and blonde hair - the third most popular girl in school.

Inside, she's a freak. A mix of dark thoughts, diabolical plots, and, if local chatter is to be believed, vampire DNA. After all, her father is from Romania. Everyone else in Nebraska is about as American as an apple pie…wrapped in a flag…on the Fourth of July.

Spider stew. That's what Anika is made of. But she keeps it under wraps to maintain her social position. One step out of line and Becky Vilhauser, first most popular girl in school, will make her life a living hell.

So when former loner Logan McDonough shows up one September hotter, smarter, and more mysterious than ever, Anika knows she can't get involved. It would be insane to throw away her social safety for a nerd. So what if that nerd is now a black-leather-jacket-wearing dreamboat, and his loner status is clearly the result of his troubled home life?

Who cares if the right girl could help him with all that, maybe even save him from it…?

Logan. Who needs him when Jared Kline, the bad boy every girl dreams of, is asking her on dates?

Who?

Andrea Portes's emotionally devastating debut YA audiobook lays bare the futility in pretending to be something we're not and the value in finally celebrating all that we are - inside.

Editor reviews

Editors Select, September 2014 - This book reminded me a lot of the movie Mean Girls with a splash of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The hallmarks of adolescence are all present including the typical high school social hierarchies and multiple love interests. Anika, our protagonist, struggles with remaining the second-most popular girl at school behind "mean girl" Becky Vilhauer or standing up for herself and owning her uniqueness - regardless of how this could affect in her social life. I loved the story and found myself looking forward to each new chapter. Anatomy of a Misfit is a great choice for anyone looking for an entertaining tale about the microcosm of high school and how roles are created, developed, and even mutated for the good or bad. Should come with a S, L and snark warning

I'm not easily offended, but it took only 10 minutes for this book to alienate me so thoroughly that I returned it. The review system forces me to give stars, which might not be fair given that I haven't listened to the whole book, but be warned: frequent and gratuitous use of really bad language, gratuitous sexual detail, slut-shaming, snarky, unlikeable main character.

You might like it, but know what you're buying. REally not suitable for younger YA readers.
