Lots of potential, but ultimately unsatisfying
I enjoyed the narration on this title, but the book itself fell short of the mark for me. The pre isle was interesting, and the first few chapters hooked me into the world, but the author’s writing feels unfinished a lot of the time. I think this book feels like the second draft of a fantasy book, and could have benefited from a little more editing to make it sound less clunky and repetitive in places.
The dialogue also feels very forced in places, although the narrator does a very good job of bringing the characters to life. I got the impression that the author doesn’t trust the audience to make connections and fill in implied parts of the world building, and so you get quite a spoon-fed version of the fantasy world. This was a shame, as the story itself was interesting and has the potential to be an excellent fantasy book.

Fantastic variation of accents
My favourite thing about this audiobook is the ability of the narrator to switch between the different required accents. It really made the story and the characters come alive for me!

An Epic Fantasy with Narration at its finest!!!
The storyline is extremely captivating and following Althalos through his journey feels very personal and it is well-developed. The narrator’s exceptional performance truly immerses you into the fantastical world. The distinct voices of the characters (not to mention the variety of accents) really enhanced the overall experience of this audiobook.

Excellent narration - brought the story to life
This is a compelling story and I thoroughly enjoyed it - as did my teenage son. I've been listening to it over a few weeks and liked the fact that I could distinguish easily between the various characters - whoever narrated this really brought it alive, which added to the whole plot line.

A Fantastically Narrated Tale
If you’re a Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings fan, this is the perfect book for you! The hero’s quest narrative is always a thrilling read, and this one did not disappoint. Althalos’ journey is full of magic, evil, complicated characters, and many challenges and barriers he is forced to overcome.
The world-building was incredibly imaginative and original, and I truly felt like I was being transported to a very fantastical place every time I would listen. I was very impressed by the detail and complicated layers of this book.
The extremely skilled narration truly brought this story to life for me. The accents and emotion in all the voices of the characters greatly enhanced the experience of this book.
With such incredible narration, this book was definitely a very immersive and engaging listen. I particularly enjoyed how each and every character had a different tone of voice or accent - a very clever way to distinguish between them all. An excellent book brought to life by its incredible narration. Would highly recommend.

An absolute epic
I loved this book and can't wait to hear what comes next. Honestly j wasn't entirely sure where it was going for the first few chapters but hang in there because the story gathers pace and the adventures roll in. Fantastic narration thst added depth and colour to what is already a richly detailed storyline. If you like fantasy fiction then this is gor you!

Great story and the narrator kept it interesting
A good combination of story, characters, action and humour. I'm somewhat outside the target audience age range but still enjoyed it 😊

Outstanding Story and Narration
If you are a fan of epic fantasy novels then look no further. A enthralling story with well rounded characters and a plot that builds with a number of unexpected twists and multiple layers. However the icing on the cake is the superb narration by Toby J Smith as he immerses you in this fantasy world and voices some unforgettable characters.
