Summary
If you were terrified by Open Water or The Shallows or suffered along with Aron Ralston through his ordeal in 127 Hours, you will find this true story of Brett Archibald’s ordeal, lost overboard in the Indian Ocean, absolutely extraordinary.
In April 2013 a global breaking news story surfaced on social media and in the world press and rapidly gathered momentum. A South African man had fallen overboard in the night during a storm in remote Indonesian waters, without anyone else on board realising. Eight hours later a frantic search was underway.
The incident caught the world's attention as people were instantly transported into the terror of the moment - imagine being left alone, 100 kilometres out to sea in the middle of a storm, watching your friends sail into the distance....
Had he been dealt a fraction more bad luck, Brett would have died immediately. According to experts, he should have died within 10 to 14 hours. But he chose not to die. Instead, for 28 and a half hours Brett Archibald endured the ocean, the elements, the creatures of the deep and his own inner demons.
Alone: Lost Overboard in the Indian Ocean is the incredible but true story of what it takes to defy needle-in-a-haystack odds and survive what should have been certain death. Outdoor savvy, astonishing imagination, mental toughness, a refusal to give up hope and a canny rescuer with an unbelievable background ultimately saw him through. Most of all this is a story of the power of the human spirit that defies rational explanation.

Gripping survival story - hard to put down
An absolutely amazing story of human courage and resilience made all the more fascinating because I know a few of the people in the book and have been to the Mentawai islands surfing myself. My wife gave me the book years ago but it sat around until I downloaded it on Audible which is a much easier way for me to get through a book. I was fascinated by the story and gripped by the events as they unfolded.
Unfortunately like many other reviewers here, the constant reference to religion is a bit too much. I found myself thinking that all the prayer for Brett was a bit fanciful, even arrogant - at what point does a God decide to respond to one particular individual who is under prayer and ignore everyone else who prays? Furthermore if his God did in fact help Brett then why did He let the accident happen in the first place and then torment him for 28 hours with so much pain, mental anguish and dashed hope? If your God is going to save you then please do it without teasing and playing games.....
In the my eyes the true saviours are Tony Doris Eltherington from the Barrenjoey and the strong group of SA surfers on the Naga Laut. A shout goes out to his other imaginary friends Bob, Hillary and Emily, also constructs of his strained delusional state who helped him through his ordeal.
An immersive story of incredible proportions. Highly recommended.

Good book, good narrator. Defo worth the credit.
Gripping for the most part. Not many would have survived this (not spoiling the story) extraordinary ordeal. This Brett bloke is unusually tough, though - I'm not much of a swimmer, so this is all my nightmares rolled into one story. Astonishing really.

Brilliant read
Great book which kept me hooked. Usually hard to please but this was a worthy choice for a Mr Fussy, who struggles to find gripping reads, but is well pleased when he does and this kept me engrossed all the way through it. Remarkable account and highly Recommendo.

Gripping
This book evokes a whole range of emotions if you let yourself imagine what you would do in this situation. It's a story of despair, of loss, of courage, of determination, of faith and ultimately achieving the impossible. Following the whole journey hour by hour gives you some insight into this ordeal and how Brett survived. Well written and well read.

Inspirational
Truly inspirational! Great story. I didn’t like the narrator much but I am not that keen on the South African accent.

Didn’t hit the spot!
A vaguely interesting storey that was more like an extended version of a Readers Digest short storey than a captivating novel.
