Summary

John Grady Cole is the last bewildered survivor of long generations of Texas ranchers. Finding himself cut off from the only life he has ever wanted, he sets out for Mexico with his friend, Lacey Rawlins.

Befriending a third boy on the way, they find a country beyond their imagining: barren and beautiful, rugged yet cruelly civilised.... A place where dreams are paid for in blood.

Wonderfully evocative and lyrical book and reading

Absolutely adored it. Timeless and beautifully written. Took me back to the 19th century in Texas and Mexico was really sorry when it ended.

Captivating

One minute it is lyricism, the beauty of the plains, Shakespearean star-crossed lovers, and before you know it people are crapping in buckets and getting their teeth smashed out. Pure Cormac McCarthy, all relayed in soaring poetic cadences and the register of the King James Bible. Genius.

Wonderful Narration

An elegiac depiction of an old world of cowboys and their horses. With senioritas, bandits and all the pretty horses. Beautifully narrated by Frank Muller.

Beautifully written, and wonderfully narrated.

My only minor gripe is the questionable Mexican Spanish accent of the narrator. Otherwise five stars.

Excellent writing . Sublimely narrated.

Wow. My experience with Cormac began with reading No Country for Old Men after watching the Coen Brothers adaptation of the book. Then Blood Meridian. Then reading them both again a couple of times over the years . I will certainly revisit this classic again. How such a picture of life can be beautifully rendered with a blend of sparse prose and intricate detail. Painting so neatly all of its futile sadness alongside the comfort found in the intricate folds of it. This is the power McCarthy wields. In my eyes the greatest living American Author of our times. Written by a Brit.

A sad life of a cowboy

Guess the life was hard in the early dayss and this story certainly gives you this impression amd luck certainly passed him by. Interesting story and well worth a listen, it might help if you know a little Spanish but it doesnt deter from the story.

Beautifully written book

Captivating and poetic. Heart wrenching, believable. In my humble opinion Cormac McCarthy is a master writer.

A beautiful and heartbreaking story.

I was truly sad to get to the end of this incredible story. The author's one of my favourites. His use of the language is both intimate and epic in turn. It's a story of love and life and freindship and belonging. it's tragic and uplifting in the way that only McCarthy can write. The narration was perfect and added so much to my enjoyment. Thanks, I loved it!

Beautiful

Very beautiful language - reminding me of Amor Towles. A bit too vague story for a 5

I was frustrated by the Spanish dialogue

A lovely, gentle, slow story. Although not all gentle content.

I was frustrated at the amount of Spanish dialogue as I do not speak Spanish. So lost some of the content and meaning and flow.
