Summary

Penelope Keith - who starred as Agatha Raisin in the popular BBC Radio 4 series - reads the whole of M. C. Beaton’s novel.

Reports of a haunted house soon have amateur sleuth Agatha Raisin snooping around, only to discover the victim of the haunting is a universally disliked old biddy on whom someone is playing a practical joke. But then the old lady is murdered and, for Agatha - Miss Marple with attitude - solving a crime is much more fun than ghost busting. Very soon she’s up to her usual tricks, involving the villagers, local police, and, naturally, her handsome new neighbour.

Exactly as expected

The story was typical Agatha Raisin fare and the performance was typical Penelope Keith - what else can I say?

Excellent story, expertly read

I love the Agatha Raisin TV series so thought I’d give the books a go. This didn’t disappoint. It’s was hard to get my head around Paul as a side-kick instead of James, but it didn’t stop me enjoying the story. I love Aggie! She gets up to all sorts of mischief and I found myself laughing out loud on a few occasions. Penelope Keith is an excellent narrator and expertly leads you into the mischief alongside the characters.

Possibly my favourite

I am very fond of the Agatha Raisin books. Light-hearted and endearing, despite the murders. I find that I engage with the story and the characters just as much as if I were listening to or reading a Harry Hole book and yet Harry is Agatha's polar opposite.

There is something quite special about hearing Penelope Keith's interpretation of Agatha's love-lorn, acerbic, smoking character venomously saying, "You useless t**t", it only serves to endear me further to both Ms Keith and Agatha.

If you are expecting a dainty, modern Miss Marple, I would advise caution.

Agatha is contemporary and relatable and although set in such an idyllic environment, there is nothing twee about these books, not even the saintly Mrs Bloxby.

Funny and well written

I absolutely loved listening to this Agatha Raisin story. I’m so sad that there will be no more in this wonderful series now the author is gone. It’s so rare to find a middle aged female character treated as an amusing and sexy person.
Penelope Keith’s enactment of this book was also spot on.
