About this listen

Do you have a toxic family member? Do you feel like cutting ties with this person—even as painful and scary as that may sound—would dramatically increase your well-being and improve your life? You're not alone. Severing ties with a family member can be devastating, and cutting this toxic person out of your life may bring up feelings of guilt and uncertainty. Fortunately, you can free yourself from this toxic family member in a healthy, responsible, and liberating way.

In Adult Survivors of Toxic Family Members, psychologist and toxic family survivor Sherrie Campbell offers effective strategies for setting strong boundaries after ending contact with a toxic family member, and provides powerful tools to help you heal from shame, self-doubt, and stigma. You'll find the validation you need to embrace your decision with pride and acknowledgement of your self-worth. You'll learn how to let go of negative thoughts and feelings. And finally, you'll develop the skills needed to rediscover self-care, self-love, self-reliance, and healthy loving relationships.

Whether you're ready to sever ties with a toxic family member, or already have, this book will help guide you, every step of the way.

The heartfelt honesty and resulting advice.

Listening to this has made me realise that this situation is real rather than another symptom of low self worth. Thank you.

Very practical - Should be mandatory reading

A great starting point but still useful later in your healing journey. This book delivers on all of the promises of her first book without the (deep pitfalls) if you like me did not get on with but its your family then try this out.

Most important book I’ve ever bought!

For anyone who is currently suffering at the hands of toxic relatives this book will change your life, it has certainly changed mine. It will be the best purchase you have ever made! Sherrie’s honesty and openness about her own experiences and her knowledge on an academic level is truly inspiring.

Loved it

Anyone who has suffered any family abuse should listen to this. Great work by someone who experienced the trauma themselves.

You need this book !

This is the first time I’ve ever left a review ! I’m a practising psychotherapist and this is one if not the best book I have ever had on coping with toxic family members, it puts the toxic behaviours into a context that is totally accessible for anyone to work with, it’s simple and elegant and gives you the assurance of not being alone, I have it on reply 🙏

Wonderful insightful supportive book

If you have had the misfortune to have been affected by this issue and have been confronted with the phenomenon so well described by Sherrie of well meaning but ill informed people telling you to make up with someone who is actually damaging you, this book is wonderful. There is huge personal insight into a very difficult to deal with problem. A problem which can require a lot of support to overcome and this book can be a great part of that. I found myself often saying “wow” out loud whilst listening to it - so appreciative that someone else understands and has put so much effort into helping others to deal with the huge negative effects of toxic family members. I found the wording very comforting and the concluding chapter was uplifting.

If the title fits you, this is a healing book.

I have great appreciation of this book for helping me understand & come to terms with the life circumstance around toxic family members. From other peoples judgements of the family scapgoat to protection against triangulation & most importantly rebuilding self esteem & protecting your own sense of self. If you want to break the toxic cycle, listen to this. It will bring a sense of relief although some parts may be triggering.

The best message is to live your best life, it's the ultimate revenge & reward.

Without doubt the best book on this subject I’ve read!

The combination of intense personal experience to draw from and a clinical psychological background elevates this book head and shoulder above many others I’ve read on this topic but also gives so many practical real life examples of how to navigate around the inevitable life events that all those of us who have had to leave toxic families encounter. Thankyou!!

Awful

just goes on about your decision to cut ties, on and on, nothing useful, nothing understanding as it’s a confusing time, just cut ties. You’re right to cut ties bla bla bla. Waste of my credit
