About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'From what is it they flee?'

He took a while to reply. By the time he spoke the men had gone inside. He said quietly, 'They killed the King.'

1660, General Edward Whalley and Colonel William Goffe, father- and son-in-law, cross the Atlantic. They are on the run and wanted for the murder of Charles I. Under the provisions of the Act of Oblivion, they have been found guilty in absentia of high treason.

In London, Richard Nayler, secretary of the regicide committee of the Privy Council, is tasked with tracking down the fugitives. He'll stop at nothing until the two men are brought to justice. A reward of £100 hangs over their heads—for their capture, dead or alive.

Act of Oblivion is an epic journey across continents and a chase like no other.

Absolutely Brilliant!

This is a well researched, beautifully written novel. The narration is superb. Harris really captures the age, almost taking you back in time. Highly recommended.

Death and Revenge

A thoroughly enjoyable travel through the historical events following the death of Charles 1 but brought to life by the narrator.

Enjoyed the history of London woven into global story

The narrator is excellent. The story is dark and London’s past is bloody. Lots of horrible history to read through in the city I now live so found it fascinating and unpleasant all at the same time.
The story gets a bit heavy midway through and takes a while to gather pace again but it’s a heavy take of life long escape and hardship. Will be thinking about this book a lot.

Hard to put down.

I have to admit to being a long-standing fan of Robert Harris. This is not just an account of a period in English history around the Civil War and the Restoration. It manages to have the suspense of a chilling thriller coupled with a with a love story. Robert has taken known figures, a serious amount of research and crafted them into a thoroughly engaging book. The characters are well formed and voiced so well by the narrator. The Regiside's hunter is a chilling character but his obsession is also driven by love. The story moves across the Atlantic and Europe over more than two decades of history. Make sure you have the time to listen to it in decent sessions. Robert at his best.
