Summary

Lou has always loved Hill House, the derelict manor on the abandoned land near her home. As a child, the tragic history of its owners, the Mandevilles, inspired her dream to become a history teacher. But in her late 20s, working in a shop to pay off student debts, life is passing her by.

That changes when a family disaster sends Lou’s life into a downward spiral and she seeks comfort in the ruined corridors of Hill House. The house transforms around her and she is transported back to Christmas 1913. Convinced she has been in an accident and is in a coma, Lou immerses herself in her Edwardian dream. With the Mandevilles oblivious to her true identity, she becomes their houseguest and befriends the eldest son, Captain Thomas Mandeville, a man she knows is destined to die in the First World War. Lou feels more at home in the past than the present and when she realises the experience is real she sets out to do everything in her power to save her new friends. She passes between 1913 and 2013, unearthing plots of murder and blackmail, which she must stop no matter the cost. On her quest to save the Mandevilles by saving Thomas, Lou will face the hardest decision of her life. She will learn that love cannot be separated by a century.

A beautiful story with wonderful narration.

This is my second time of listening and the story is even better on repeated reading. I love time travel stories and this one is so we'll researched and executed. The characters are well described and the range of voices is excellent. Wish the author's second book was also available to listen to. Thoroughly recommend!

A beautiful, emotional story. For fans of history, time travel, magic, etc - and heart-tugging romance! Enjoyed it a lot. Compulsive listening.

made me cry

I thought it started alittle slow but Continued to read and I'm so pleased I did. I didn't even realise how I became invested in the story of Lou and Tom. A modern time travel story that the traveller was able to go back and forward. Its all about the butterfly effect that most time travel books miss out including.

Adored it - so much better than Kate Morton’s books and yet quite similar in style

Riveting and a real page turner.

I don't know where to start! It's been a long time since I've cried over a book. What am amazing story, well written and narrated. I've bought book two and hope that it has the same effect. Well maybe not the tears!!

Absolutely beautiful

I read this book some years ago, and it has stayed with me. I saw the audible version and had to listen. I just didn’t want it to end, for lovers of time travel and history this is perfect. The narrator was good, but lacked a little when it came to the different voices. However no this could spoil this wonderful story.

A sweet story

As I'm neither literary professional nor performer I can't say whether this is an excellent piece of literature or astounding voice work, but I really enjoyed it. A sweet story and good to listen to while doing boring housework.
