Summary

Zimbabwe, 1981. An airliner crashes killing nearly everyone on board.

Among a handful of survivors, former Special Branch officer Max Seager quickly realises that it was no accident—and that no one can be left alive.

But as the army patrol dispatched to complete the massacre soon learns to its cost, Max was no ordinary policeman.

Part detective, part soldier, his formidable skills were honed during a brutal civil war, and the lives of the small party of fellow passengers in his care now depend on him.

To reach safety, he must guide them across hundreds of miles of hostile wilderness on foot.

Few know the Zimbabwean bush like Max, but, pursued by a ruthless and determined enemy, he will need every ounce of courage, resourcefulness, and hard-won expertise just to keep his little band alive. Let alone figure out why someone wanted them dead in the first place....

If You Like Wilbur Smith, Andy McNab, Frederick Forsyth, and Jack Higgins, Then You’ll Love Mike Lunnon-Wood.

A Place to Die is perfect for fans of books like A Time to Die, The Leopard Hunts in the Darkness, and The Dogs of War, or of movies like The Wild Geese, The Dirty Dozen, or The Expendables.

Well read… for an Englishman…😇

Nothing but a couple of pronunciations of Africans words, such as “coptjie”, “Janie” and a few more…
Just a few Afrikaans pronunciations…

Weak story, Abysmal narration.

I hugely enjoyed all of the ‘previously released books by the late Mike Lunnon-Wood but sadly this is proving to be a disappointment on several levels:
1. The plot is pretty shaky and seems full of holes. Is it credible that the main characters survive the crash with zero injuries while most of the passengers are dead? Would our hero really be able to carry half the kit that he is given?
2. I really wanted to like the narration but it is utterly atrocious. The narrator has a pleasant voice but his (rare) attempts at Zimbabwean/South African accents are truly miserably inaccurate. Most sound exactly the same and all are completely wrong. Vicky’s upper class English accent is a bizarre caricature of how people spoke in the 1800s and also makes her sound like a 60 year old man.

The greatest irritations are the mispronunciations:
kopje should be ‘coppee’ not cop-djee
Selous Scouts should be ‘Seloo’ not sellus
Pay Corps should be ‘Corr’ not corpse
It’s a Kalashnikov not a kal-ish-nikov
Jannie (sp?) should be ‘Yannie’

And so on.

Incidentally the horizon for a 6ft man is three miles away not 18.

I did start making notes of all the mispronunciations until I realised that it might have been easier to make a note of the words he got right. Surely the narrator could have bothered to do some research? Completely ruined an already weak book. It’s now clear why this was never published previously.

Don’t buy this book. Spend your money on Lennon-Wiods British military quartet.

Great Story

I throughly enjoyed this audio from start to finish. The only thing I didn’t like was the dodgy South African accents!!!

Awful

Awful! Slow, tedious and full of boring stereotypes. Save your credits for something better - including some of Lunnon-Smiths other books
